I also hoped I might be able to use it to provide 5GHz WiFi to my Raspberry Pi model 3B running OpenWrt but this does not work due to driver issues and Pi limitations with USB WiFi. Need a Pi 3B+ that has 5GHz support built-in, no dongle required.
Next up is testing it on a Dell laptop running x64 Ubuntu Linux.
At first I was confused how to find the 5G connection - the manual is for older Windows and hovering over my wireless icon I could see 5G was added, but I couldn't find it in the list of available connections. That's because my 2.4GHz (and some neighbours connections) were under the profile "Wifi" up the top and the 5G connection was under "Wifi 2" profile. So check that if you're having issues. There's a drop down box at the top of your available connections in Windows 10 so currently I have to switch between the two profiles to go from 2.4 to 5. I'll probably try tinker in Settings to see if I can configure more but that setup is fine. You can see "Wifi" and "Wifi 2" in your actual Settings for WIfi as well.
The complaints about speed not magically becoming lightning fast - your internet is your internet fam. If it's slow it's slow. This is handy to get your older devices connected with others for file sharing, Chromecast etc. Also, to free up those valuable 5 slots on the 2.4GHz band for older devices that cannot be upgraded if you're in a household with many people and devices. I'll put as much on 5GHz as I can.
I say give it a try and see if it works - it's inexpensive and worth the gamble if you can add that functionality if you needed it.
PS: The adapter normally comes with a driver installation mini CD, it was broken as two pieces when it arrived!!. However, luckily it worked straightaway.
5 stars so far
No option to connect to 5Ghz frequency even after confirming my other devices are connected to it
