The process is a bit messy but I’ve spent the past 40 years watching hairdressers put highlights into my hair so I knew how to do it. I used a bowl and a thick makeup brush and wrapped the streaks in foil. Left it on for 30 min. I also used gloves and wiped up spills right away as it stains surfaces.
After these photos I put some streaks next to my face which I don’t like as they’re too bright. I’ve scrubbed them half a dozen times trying to get the stuff to lighten up but it really adheres to my light gray hair.
I’ve just ordered Virgin Pink and the diluter and can’t wait to try it!
The dye itself is fantastic, Arctic Fox is the best dye on the market. I take hot showers every day and the colour still lasts all month for me. Then goes to a beautiful pastel for the second month. I usually leave it in for an hour to saturate my hair. It smells lovely and is gentle on my hair (I have very fine thin hair).
♡ Wash hair in sulphate free shampoo using COOL WATER only ONCE a week with sulphate free conditioner ( I use OSMO).
♡ I wash then add some artic fox (a good blob) to my conditioner and leave it on for 30 mins, this way is conditioning and colouring at the same time.(don't forget your gloves etc!)
♡ Rinse with cool water and towel dry.
♡ I don't colour every time I condition but when needed.
I certainly would not even bother with any other ranges as they don't last and you end up with most of it on your pillow ( this leaves some on pillow but not much compared to other brands ).My colour can last up to 4 weeks being majorly vibrant without the need to add any colour to it, then after that I either recolour or top up colour mixed with my conditioner.
Beyond that, it took about a solid hour of intense rinsing to wash most, not all, of the initial toner cream out. Even then there was a distinct residue left on sheets etc. A quality, long lasting toner should wash out fairly easily and should never leave residue on sheets. The product itself is incredibly thick and hard to apply consistently and evenly to hair. This makes it frustrating to apply to root sections, and you end up using more than you should need to on the scalp.
On the upside, the colour was vibrant and pretty even if short lived. Stains on the skin will come out fairly easily with micellar water and some scrubbing should you not own a bottle of stain remover, but it will also take colour off your hair if it gets caught. Because, like all toners, Arctic Fox contains humectants and does not deposit colour deep into the shaft, it will not damage your hair, but be aware that you probably should not use this product if your hair is easily weighed down. It acts like a heavy conditioner, so it will take volume out of your hair quickly. On the other hand, it also makes your hair very silky and shiny.
In summary: if you don't feel like taking tepid to cold showers to maintain colour or you want something longer lasting, I'd suggest you find a different kind of toner. Ones that use a low level developer (1.8% or 6 vol) like Wella Koleston will ultimately last longest, and you can still take normal hot showers. If you have thin or easily weighed down hair you should opt for a lighter-weight toner. Some other reviewers have recommended cutting the cream with more (MORE) conditioner, but this will only weigh your hair down further as it just adds more humectants. The only way I can see this maybe not being the case is if you cut it with cleansing conditioner, but I don't intend to test that hypothesis. If you want long lasting colour with minimal upkeep, I'd have to recommend going for something else.
First the positives:
I chose black and was impressed by how black it made my hair. I mean, I've been dying my hair black for about 25 years, but the Arctic Fox black is REALLY BLACK! It also goes on with no fuss, no hassle and a minimum of mess (it's semi-perm, so accidental spillage is not a big deal. Mostly...)
It lasts about 2 washes. I don't wash my hair with shampoo every day - usually about once or twice a week, so to my dismay, by the second wash with shampoo and lukewarm water (about the 3rd week of actual coverag) my original colour was mostly back.
It's really messy whilst on your head. I have a habit of touching my hair a lot. No idea why, but I tuck bits behind my ears, scoop bits back into a pony tail and let it dangle free, run my fingers through it to de-tangle and so on. Whenever I do this, I get black all over my nails and finger tips which I have to immediately wash off. Yes, I know it's a semi-perm hair dye, but it seems to come off onto my fingers more noticeably than other semi-perms I've used.
It doesn't make a dent on grey hairs. To be fair, it never claims to be suitable for grey hairs, but I thought it would make a very slight difference. Unfortunately not. I'm an elder Goth who is just starting to go grey at the sides and once the rest of my hair was dyed jet black, the grey parts stood out like a sore thumb. This may or may not be the look you are going for, and whilst it didn't bother me too much - I was disappointed that the dye didn't do anything at all to mute the greys.
So would I recommend it? Sure - if you've never used it before, definitely give it a go. The fact that it contains only nice ingredients should be an immediate attraction to the product. But my experience, whilst not a total disappointment, was very much a "meh" experience as I was expecting a lot more. Your mileage may vary, of course...
As far as the fading, I’ve only given it a full wash once at the moment (no immediate fade!) so will see how it fairs. All in all a fab product :)
I'd read a number of reviews saying the colour would only work properly on level 9 or 10 hair, however I was pleasently surprised at how the colour turned out. Considering I have 2-3 inch light brown roots and highlights instead of an all over bleach, the colour looked beautiful and close to how it has been marketed online. It came out a light blue with a shiny silver iridescent tone which I adore. It also smells amazing!
2 weeks later and washing pretty much every other day, the colour has faded but a small amount of dye mixed with conditioned keeps the colour tone, and it still has a hint of the original dye smell which is great.
I will definitely be buying this again when my hair needs a top up of colour!
