To be fair the book is aimed at absolute beginners and it really goes no further than the very basics.I have played guitar for 35 years and started learning banjo recently. I found I outgrew this short book very quickly and in hind sight should have probably chosen a more substantial volume.
I am progressing (slowly) through the book and am just over half way through. The lessons are very clear and the CD Tracks are very useful in demonstrating how you should make the banjo sound.A very enjoyable challenge.
basic structure to starting from scratch, moves forward in manageable chunks, very enjoyable as the novice starts to build their first tunes(along with the CD) would recommend for a beginner, however there aren't many tunes.Although this can sometimes be a bonus for the novice like myself
I bought this book being completely new to the banjo, and I have to say that I thinks it's fantastic. Dead easy to read / understand and the cd is a great help too. I borrowed a couple of books from a local tutor and they were nowhere near as good as this one and the others that I looked at on Amazon did not have the same appeal as Absolute Beginners. If you are starting out with the banjo then please buy this book. You definitely won't regret it.
Be wary when ordering this item. I ordered a copy only to realise that I had ordered the book WITHOUT the CD/DVD that it mentions in the text. Another £8 got me the right book. My fault - just don't be as hasty as I was, and read before pressing that "buy now" button
