Product description
Review
Finally! A sassy and heartwarming board book to teach our children the alphabet of humane values. Innosanto Nagara knows that activism begins in the cradle, but to be sustainable, it has to be wide-ranging, deep-rooted, and based ultimately on a sense of fun and community. A is for Activist covers all this ground with a playful rhyming style that makes you want to turn the pages and read the book over and over again. The illustrations are so colorful, beautifully executed, little works of art in and of themselves. What a great book for children of all ages. --Julia Alvarez, author of A Wedding in Haiti: the Story of a Friendship and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents Memorable, often humorous poems that teach the alphabet through activist political examples. Never too early to expose your children to justice. --Viet Thanh Nguyen in Vulture.com Full of wit, beauty, and fun, we can think of no better way to learn the alphabet. --Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis, author of The Shock Doctrine /filmmaker Fun, funny, exquisitely illustrated and brilliantly written with a message that is sure to resonate with kids. May a thousand young activists bloom! --Medea Benjamin, cofounder of Global Exchange and Code Pink I wish this beautiful and inspiring book was around when my daughter was young, but fortunately there were plenty of cool children around today who will devour what Inno is serving up! --Dan Zanes, Grammy Award-winning artist of Catch that Train! The alliteration and rhymes have the rhythm and fun of standard ABC books, burrowing into little ears and prompting memorization and spontaneous recitation. --YES! Magazine A is for Activist offers an opportunity for parents to explore their values with their children. At this time in history we need books for children that use words like justice, ally, freedom, and advocate. --Rona Renner, RN, parent educator, and host of Childhood Matters radio show
A is for Activist speaks to the possibilities of change, of proactive parenting, of creating community, and of celebrating our collective histories. This book is rad! --Tomas Moniz, writer/editor Rad Dad, a zine on radical parenting "Reading it is almost like reading Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, but for two-year olds--full of pictures and rhymes and a little cat to find on every page that will delight the curious toddler and parents alike." --Occupy Wall Street

About the Author
"Innosanto Nagara was born and raised in Indonesia, and moved to the US in 1988 to study zoology and philosophy at UC Davis. Upon graduation, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked as a graphic designer for a range of social change organizations, before founding the Design Action Collective, a worker-owned cooperative design studio in Oakland, California, that is dedicated to "serving the Movement." Inno lives in a cohousing community in Oakland where his child is the youngest of eight children to be born into the household, so he has "studied" a lot of children's books over the past twelve years. A is for Activist is Inno's first book."

Please do not buy this book if you are offended by ideas of equality, social justice..........

An unashamedly left wing children's board book, and i mean proper left, not the old style new labor left which was really central to small c right. Anyway, be warned, if you don't want to introduce you kid to the ideas of, human rights, social justice, equality, standing up for social change etc then don't buy this book, and don't buy it as a gift for anyone who has right wing sentiments or you suspect may do as they will hate the book and probably view it as some kind of communist threat.
Personally I like the book, as does my 4 year old daughter, It can be read on a few levels and is nicely interactive. My aim is to try and raise a well rounded, open minded person who can think for themselves and books like these are a useful way to introduce big ideas in a simple way, great for starting conversations. Other reviewers have used words like "preachy" and "indoctrination" to describe this book. Well i would argue that as much as any single children's book can be indoctrinating i would much rather a book that tries to install ideas of an inclusive world than reading my daughter asinine books that teach her that all she can aspire be are imaginary roles such as princess or fairy, who of cause are all pretty. pointless and powerless and who,s only hope in life is to be rescued by some prince or other.

Unique and well made gift - gave it to the child of right wing parents just to be annoying and to mitigate their influence

Great to teach from a young age
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2019Verified Purchase
I'm very much an advocate of teaching children about rights and autonomy from a young age, and this book is great to simplify this and teach children. Names and ideas which might not be understood, admittedly, and a parent may have to put in a fair bit of work, but the illustrations and colour in this book are beautiful and so vibrant. I'd have this book myself!

Hmmm possibly a bit premature for my two year old. I don’t even understand some of the words and I’m close to 40...
