All I can say, is if you have a brain that has developed beyond early adolescence, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. It is utter drivel. Like another reviewer I should have read before I bought the stupid thing wrote - how did a publishing company even pick this up??? Enquiring minds want to know.

A lot of drama. It seemed as though it was meant to be a YA book but had mature themes. The story line was somewhat forced and a little unbelievable. Tessa makes bad choices in a lot of areas of her life is easily led in this book not making her a great role model and leaving me as a reader feeling a little annoyed withe her. Hardin was someone who im not sure about. He annoyed me and he also acted immaturely.
I am sure some will love the drama, it feels young and it wasnt for me.

I felt like this story line was very incredibly repetitive - another guy who has an abusive past who appears to be a sexy and shady character. He has commitment and control issues and she couldn't stay away from him, they continued to fight over the same issues and make up shortly after, which was boring for me. However, I persevered and finished the book. The ending was unexpected (won't spoil for anyone who intends to read) - I have to say this would surprise most people and I was sad for her. I won't be bothering to read the rest of the series

Initially I liked this book, yet others hated it, now i've read book 2 I see why. Don't waste your time.
She's stupid, he's an A-HOLE and they'll end up living happily ever after even though he's a pathetic excuse for a character and she is just a downright door mat, who loves getting walked all over and hurt and used.

This book is terrible. Don't believe the hype and don't waste your money or time. This book blathers on way too long and not one of the characters are likeable, especially the whiny main character. Predictable, repetitive, boring and of course it doesn't resolve- leaving a cliffhanger. Absolutely awful....

Wow! Why didn't I hear about this story ages ago? I love the suspense in this story. Meeting Hardin and Tessa was intense, passionate and heart stopping journey. I look forward to reading more...

After watching the movie "After", I decided I would read the books. Whilst the movie and book are vastly different, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Quite frankly, I couldn't put the book down at all. Highly recommended this book, I am already reading the sequel.

I watched the movie, really enjoyed it, so i thought i'd give the books a go.
Goodness... I didn't realise publishing companies would be ok to publish so much nonsense.
It was so cringe. From start to finish.
The book seems to have been written by a pre-pubescent girl. The conversations between Tessa and Hardin were so juvenile and childish, I wanted to slap some sense into Tessa and call the cops on Hardin.
Even the sex... felt like a child trying to describe what they thought an x-rated scene would be like... the author could not even bring herself to use the word penis or breast.
This book is really really not ok. It's message to young girls is that love is suppose to hurt and if it doesn't, you aren't doing it right.
The abuse is atrocious and alarming and I am mortified that young girls will use this as a model to measure what love and affection is suppose to feel like.

I wish I knew where to start, apart from what I read in the blurb I knew nothing about this story. Then I mentioned After in a tweet and suddenly I’m being told that what I’m reading glorifies abuse, features rape and is based around One Direction.
Panic set in, how can I do this, it goes against everything I’ve ever read, seriously I’m about to read a book about One Direction!
Now let’s get this out there, I am not a One Direction fan, my knowledge stretches to knowing that the curly haired one dated Caroline Flack.
The truth is I don’t care who the characters were originally based around, because this book is a work of FICTION.
I feel I need to address the rape and abuse allegations that flit around social media regarding this book.
Within the pages of After you are pulled into a story of love, now this isn’t the Disney love story we grew up believing in but then again we also don’t have genies living in lamps.
What Anna Todd has created is a story of love that’s so consuming the characters can’t control their emotions, BOTH characters use things against each other and in some cases their love and hate divide walks a very fine line.
There is no glorifying of abuse or rape within the pages of After,
Todd has captured the emotions and thoughts of Tessa Young our main protagonist in ways that allow us to see the inner turmoil she at times experiences.
Tessa is about to embark on a new life at college. leaving behind her mother and boyfriend Noah,
But college doesn’t introduce Tessa to like minded people, instead she meets roommate Steph, a tattooed party lover who has a whole crowd of friends she is willing to share.
One of these being Hardin, a guy who manages to get under Tessa’s skin.
I’m torn on how to describe the characters because I didn’t particularly like Hardin or Tessa. At times they both annoyed me and there are moments where I hated Hardin and everything he did.
That being said there is a great mix of characters throughout this story, from the manic Molly to the loveable Landon and let’s not forget nice Noah.
But despite my lack of love for the characters I could not put this book down, it was the emotion that drove this book for me and it’s that which has left me desperate to read more.
There are elements of this book that shocked me, facts that disgusted me but hand on heart I loved it.
With its short chapters this 592 page story is definitely a quick read, there was life before this book and then there was everything AFTER!

Holy moly!!

I had no idea what to expect from this book. I'm not going to lie, people in a book group were commenting about a film called 'After' based off a book, and well I love reading the books before I watch the films they are based off of, so here I am making one of the best decisions ever. Holy moly!! At first i wasn't sure if I would like Tessa, if I would be able to connect with her, but I love her and her growth in this book. Hardin I have a love/ hate relationship with, without giving away spoilers, he puts Tessa through it but has such vulnerable moments you cant help but feel sorry for him. I had real laugh out loud moments when reading this book to the point I got some odd looks off people. It does end on a cliffhanger and in my opinion a pretty big one. Luckily I don't have to wait for the next one as its currently downloading. A must buy book.

Draining
Reviewed in the United States on 2 December 2018Verified Purchase
I just couldn't get through this book. Quite frankly, I'm baffled at all the high reviews. This book literally drained me to read.
First let's start with the fact that the characters read far younger than they are. Tessa reads more 16 than a college student and Hardin doesn't read close to 20 which he would be as a second year student. Tessa's internal monologue was grating and the constant screaming and use of exclamation marks was just—well let's just say I would rather stick bamboo in my fingernails then continue reading.
On to the next point which may contain spoilers so skip this if you don't want anything spoiled. Neither character had any redeemable qualities. I read a lot about it being a toxic relationship and people putting the blame on Hardin, but let's be honest, Tess is just as bad. What this book boils down to is sex and not love. After Hardin constantly treating her like crap she always runs back and guess what they do? Yup, fool around. So I repeat, that's not love, that's lust. For instance: After getting in a big fight with Hardin (and after cheating on her boyfriend for weeks) Tessa calls her BF and begs him to skip out on school and drive 3 hours to see her just to piss Hardin off. Once he gets there, she ditches him the second Hardin "needs her" then proceeds to take her boyfriend's car and stay the night with Hardin without telling her BF. Then proceeds to screw around with Hardin. Things obviously blow up the next day but then she gets back with her boyfriend to once again cheat on him and then dump him. These are HER actions, nothing Hardin pushes, in fact he tells her she's pathetic and stupid for breaking it off with him.
Then there is a crap ton of back and forth. Seriously, they fight every chapter and considering most chapters are below 1,500 words that's draining.
The final blow is the fact that the writing is crap. Very choppy and the lack of contraction makes the writing seem odd. Most people won't say "I will take you. they'll say "I'll take you." I don't mind it in the narration, but when people are talking it should sound like people are talking.
In the end, I made it to 65% which is pretty good considering I had to stop frequently. I'm really not sure how this is so popular and why just like 50 shades, they are making a movie which will obviously be terrible because the source material is terrible. (Speaking of 50 shades, there are so many plot points taken from there it literally made me roll my eyes.) I did skip to the end and the way it ends is so contrived I just can't. At almost 600 pages you would think more would actually happen.
So, if you like characters with actual substance, then skip this book. If you want to read constant yelling then screwing around with no underlying ANYTHING—then this is your book.

Not worth the hype. What a waste of money. I don’t understand how glorifying an emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship can be an exciting or fantastic read. It is frustrating to read!
