Had 2 of these and both had the same issue, unresponsive pads, which only work when struck hard. Akai confirmed the first unit was faulty, then ignored me when I asked about the second one behaving the same. Searching online people do seem to be having issues with pad sensitivity (although the opposite to my issue with the pads being oversensitive), and as you can't adjust the sensitivity it seems to be an inherent problem with this model (apparently with some other models you can adjust the sensitivity).
So yeah this has been my only AKAI purchase and I won't be bothering with them again. Shame as it might be a great item when working properly, but I'm not gonna go through Amazon's entire stock until I find one.
I haven't yet been able to get it to work with ProTools, which is what I bought it for. As for downloads of the software that comes with it, the download speed is appalling, and it then times out. The VIP software which is only 1.8Gb, and should only have taken a matter of a couple of hours, I had to leave running overnight, and then after finally downloading, it won't recognise the numerous music software/plugins that I have. As for the Sonivox Big Drums (6.7Gb), I left it downloading for a good 48 hours and then towards the end it failed. As a professional in the internet business I have a solid high speed data business internet connection. I do not expect this sort of speed and subsequent failure, particularly from a brand such as Akai. Very disappointing. Not a recommended product.
Looks ok, and seems sturdy enough. However as pointed out in numerous other reviews there's a problem with the sensitivity of the pads with it producing multiple hits due to oversensitivity. A good solid, stable surface makes it better, but even with my most sturdy, solid table I was still getting intermittent extra triggers and I've had to return it.
Also there are no useful instructions with this and the website is awful. It took quite a bit of time to get it set up and a lot of research. Even installing the software was unclear (and I've been building PCs for 30 years - I'm not a technophobe) and the website had multiple dead links to software that was supposed to be bundled. A not fun experience.
TIP to help with sensitive pads: If you're unable to return this and have sensitivity issues, I found mention that the oversensitivity can be due to it simply being assembled too tightly. Some have had success with simply loosening the screws on the back. I'm not going to do this as it would no doubt invalidate warranty and I'd rather return and get something from another company, which I'll research beforehand this time :)
The first one I received had really poor sensitivity of the middle four pads, to the point it was totally unusable. The replacement one was better from a sensitivity point of view (but still far from great), but one of the pads was stuck on, so it's going back too. Basically the quality control is shambolic and the variations between units is massive. If you get a good one, it's a nice unit at a great price, but I've had 2 out of 2 faulty ones. Do you want to take the risk?
I was all up for this, support and what ya get with is has broken links and just shoddy. Lack of info and just poor. The product is cheap thin and tacky. Pad's when using Full level are tacky cheap and sh*te. Totally worth less than the cheap price it is.
I did a lot of research before buying this and what I was most apprehensive about was the sensitivity of the pads as people had talked about double hits being recorded or responsiveness not quick enough. I have noticed double hits but it really depends on how you 'play' it. If I hit the pads correctly, this isn't a problem for me. The responsiveness I have had no problem with either. For the price, I am very pleased with it and would buy it again.
First of all, I want to outline the fact that I have received a faulty product - LCD screen did not work at all rendering some of the options useless when attempting to load presets for different software.
My MPD232 came with very unresponsive touch pads - had to hit them quite hard for them to register velocity, even on highest settings. Read reviews online that there is an airgap between pads and plastic-electronic sheet that acts as a sensor, causing this issue - some people apparently take them apart and put isolating tape layers between pads and the sensor to make it more sensitive but cannot advise whether that works.
Other than the fact that I was unable to use it properly, AKAI website provides outdates software on the product page where you register MPD, however if you contact them via support ticket, they will provide you with bunch of cool programs and refreshed AKAI Essentials, which I found pretty cool. Ableton Live that comes with it (did not come with mine sadly) is also pretty need software.
All in all, product presents itself visually great, looks professional and fun to use, yet I cannot comment on actual full performance due to the above.
All in all, decided to get a refund to get NI Maschine MK3 and I'm very happy with my choice.
Got delivered this morning. Went to the website to create an account to be able to get the software. Installed on my desktop. Once it was done it said the computer had to be restarted. Done that and it booted into a blue screen. Spent most of the afternoon trying to get it to boot up and it’s looking like a fresh install of windows is needed. Then I tried getting the software for my laptop and it refused to even install. Terrible.
