I enjoyed book one. I wanted it to last a bit longer but that’s how they suck you in to book two! So off I go to buy it. They don’t disappoint

More action adventure than apocalyptic survival
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 August 2019Verified Purchase
The best part of this book is that the action never stops, with gunfights breaking out at regular intervals, but if you are looking for a realistic post apocalyptic survival novel all the fighting gets in the way - there is almost zero thought given to the real problem of how people survive when all the usual things we rely on are suddenly removed. Most people are just acting like it’s a power cut and ignoring the fact that their cars and phones have died, and fighting over things that clearly aren’t going to matter if the light don’t come back on. However, this book is in a different league to most of the badly written offerings in this genre and the many 5 star reviews on Amazon.com reflect this, so read it, enjoy and make your own mind up.
Spoilers
Around 85% there is a mix up over a generator. Sara has turned it off to refuel when the baddies turn up, yet the PIR lights turn on. Then she goes back in the house which is in darkness (no electricity because the generator is off?) yet a couple of pages later the generator suddenly cuts out, even though it wasn’t on. Apart from all that, how come the PIR lights work anyway? I thought we had decided that anything electronic had stopped working.
I got a bit fed up with reading page after page of backstory on various peripheral characters only to have them killed off soon afterward. It became apparent eventually that your only real chance of survival was to be Beth or part of Landon’s family. The plot became a bit predictable, with the showdown between Beth and the baddies being obvious from a long way back.

Starts well, but.......

It starts well enough but falls short of the apocalypse thriller I was hoping for. It failed on several points. One, was that to have an apocalypse, people need to know there was one going on. Instead we had a northern US town in a winter blizzard who didn't notice the EMP and believed that the power outage was just the storm. Great premise for a while. But the book ended with most people still moaning about suing the power companies for not getting the lights back on. The second was all sorts of weird inconsistencies throughout. The snow is so deep it up to peoples thighs, yet an old 1970s volkwagon beetle (not affected by the EMP) swiftly drives around swerving dead cars (static snow piles, surely). Really? The book starts with our heroine hunting and fighting in the wilderness like a fully blown Cherokee brave. sensitive to every snapping twig, every animal scent. Capable of taking on a hungry bear. Yet when it comes to the big fight, she gets clubbed on the back of the head twice. By different people. In less than 30 minutes. Big disappointment.
But the worse complaint about the story is just how nasty it was. Within hours of the lights going out in this sleepy little mountain town, people are out and about murdering at a rate that would make a Mexican cartel boss gasp. Every woman becomes a potential rape victim. Drug gangs are vying for the death toll league title with psycho gangs. And this in a town that has power cuts every single winter. Remember, most of the murderers rampaging did not know there was apocalypse going on.
I didn't enjoy any aspect of the book but I can understand that there is a niche for this sort of apoc variant.
There is a sequel. I will not be buying it.
