No one is innocent in this story....
The unmissable new stand-alone from the number one best seller of The Good Turn.
First rule: Make them like you.
Second rule: Make them need you.
Third rule: Make them pay.
They think I'm a young, idealistic law student, that I'm passionate about reforming a corrupt and brutal system.
They think I'm working hard to impress them.
They think I'm here to save an innocent man on death row.
They're wrong. I'm going to bury him.
"Diabolically clever, highly compelling and deeply moving. I loved The Murder Rule and did not want it to end." (Don Winslow, New York Times best-selling author of The Force and The Border)
"Extraordinary. Haunting. An incredible thriller. I could not put this book down. Dervla McTiernan is a gifted writer with a very special way of telling a story. This is a heart stopping rollercoaster of a tale." (Adrian McKinty, New York Times best-selling author of The Chain)

I needn't have worried. I consumed the first chapter sitting in Durty Nelly's pub in Perth while waiting for the author to take the chair (I was going to say stage, but there wasn't one), and again I was hooked. Competing with the raucous roar of a busy kitchen coping with the Wednesday evening rush , Ms. McT told of her interest in the eccentricities of the US legal system and how that and a J1 visa had led to the new book.
It's difficult to say much more without spoilers, and this is a story with twists and turns that are best experience from a position of ignorance. Suffice it to say that the book delivers a satisfying legal thriller that makes you care about the characters while you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what the next page turn will bring. I enjoyed it so much I can forgive Cormac Reilly being banished to a character cryogenic storage facility for a bit.
One thing I do dispute with the author. At the launch she said the story didn't provide an opportunity for a sequel. On the contrary - as I read the final pages I though that although that particular tale had reached completion, the characters and their vocation could easily live on.
An excellent book. Too short, of course, but I always want a good story to go on forever.
The problem now, of course, is waiting for the next adventure to hit the shelves.
Thank your Dervla for hours of enjoyment.
Without revealing critical plot elements, Hannah Rokeby inveigles her way into a position on the Innocence Project. However, rather than being driven to free wrongly incarcerated felons, she has an apparent ulterior motive. Her goal seems to be to ensure that one felon, in particular, remains in jail.
Hannah is both clever and persuasive. Nonetheless, along the way, there are numerous unexpected twists and turns. Indeed, the final washup comes quite out of the blue.
In terms of rating “The Murder Rule”, this is a difficult task. In the end, I came to the conclusion that although very good, “The Murder Rule” is not as compelling as McTiernan’s previous novels. I’ve always enjoyed the setting of Ireland. Perhaps it’s a simple as the fact that Ireland is less well known than the USA. Ireland is more unique. The weather is more inclement, the characters a little less glossy and the overall feel a bit more gritty.
It must have been hard for an Irish/Australian lawyer to interpret American culture and systems and Dervla carries it off. I would have liked bit more depth in the explanations but the story read very well.

Now, unlike Cormac, Hannah is not the most likable of characters - after all, she admits from the start that she has a mission:
First Rule: Make them like you
Second Rule: Make them need you
Third Rule: Make them pay
and the people that she is targeting? Well, they are the people who are working at the famous Project Innocence and their new client who is on death row.
Hannah's reasoning and behaviour is revealed through a series of diary entries belonging to her mother and the facts that she chooses to reveal as the story progresses. And there are a few genuine moments of shock as I realised just how many risks she is willing to take - not just with her own life but also playing with the careers and lives of her new friends and colleagues.
There is definitely a sense of high pressure as the deadline for the client looms ever closer and Hannah increases her gambles to win, against the Project Innocence team. But as she comes closer to 'winning' , we start to notice that there are some differences in the stories that we have heard and now Hannah may be responsible for the impending death of an innocent man.
I loved this book, the story catches your attention from the opening page as Hannah sneakes away from her home life in the middle of the night and blags her way onto the project, only to cause instant havoc. You know that this is just the start of a high-octane thriller. Turn off the phone, grab a (big) cuppa and revel in this brilliant novel.

Got through it in a day..

A fantastic courtroom drama that would make a great film
