Josie - The Bubbly Book Reviewer
5.0 out of 5 starsBe pulled into a world through dark, yet captivating writing.
Reviewed in Australia on 31 March 2021
Daniel Greene pulls you into his world by weaving plot and characters with his dark, yet captivating writing.

I must admit I am not a fan of horror or reading grizzly details of terrible murders, but I both read and skimmed these parts, without any loss of the storyline. These detailed descriptions, which I was warned about, were the only things I did not like about this book, although I am sure there are many out there that appreciate them.

What I did appreciate is, that I came to care about these characters in such a short time, which takes some brilliant writing skills. Also, I had a bit of a giggle at Greene’s take on the character releasing the breath they didn’t know they were holding -
“Khlid realized she was taking a drag from a cigarette she did not remember lighting.”

This short book was a real page-turner. I would recommend this book and I look forward to reading the series to come.

2.0 out of 5 starsOK for a first effort

This feels like a first act and not a complete story. There isn't much by way of resolution and it would be nice to know a little bit more about a literal God showing up in the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but ultra vague

The author is very talented and I found his writing style quite enjoyable. I found the second half more enjoyable personally but murder mysteries aren't my cup of tea.

This got 3 stars (was leaning strongly towards 4) primarily because it tried to introduce a new seemingly complex world, 3 new characters, and run a full major plot line, all within 100 pages. There just wasn't enough space. The first two would have been pretty good together in their own book I think but the plot line element (on its own was excellent) ended up drowning out world building and character development.

The characters ended up feeling pretty one note and the world ends up so vague that you can't grasp anything in it and little things I come up with to make it more digestible were often contradicted later in the book.

With all that whining I really did enjoy this for the most part and if another story is told in this world I'm totally on board for another

3.0 out of 5 stars One to keep an eye on

This story was a lot of fun and kept me reading for the ... well okay, the couple of hours it took to read it. A bit rocky at the start (I was worried at 20% into the e-book), it might have needed a little more polish but I urge you to stick with it. By 50% in there are some great scenes and the writing really settles. Compelling story and setting, chilling enemies and politics. Good stuff!

Any similarities to Lucas Thorn's Nysta series can be put down to the hilarious coincidence of tough female lead character infected with dark magical black goo-worms. This is Greene's first piece of writing and I salute his efforts! With the following he has, he could maybe have afforded to make this novella cheaper for the page count (especially for the e-book), but more power to him for going independent. Three stars may seem a bit meh, but there's huge potential here and I want room to grow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been better

I'll start by saying this is not a horrible book, just it fail to reach it's potential, it feels very lacking. If you would look at it as cheap production for first book, it would probably be rated 4 stars, although the problems would still be there.
But considering the author could have had 100 beta readers and afford the best editor money could buy, knowing he'll return his investment, this book just feels not done.

Starting with the good thing,
The book hit the floor running. From the first paragraph it waste no time.
Sadly, this is where the book starts to go astray.

The bad:
There are several very lazy tells which doesn't go well. It's not enough to tell me that when two characters work together they are very good at it, show it to me.
There are continuity issues which feels like the author was inlove with something he wrote and refused to edit problematic points.
The big reveal has very weak (if at all) foreshadowing, giving the last act very deus ex machina feeling to it and the twist is very obvious basically after couple of chapters.
The world feels under developed to the point of no development at all.

This book could have been so much better if it "better" beta readers.

I would personally recommend skipping this book, although I usually really enjoy flintlock fantasy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort!

I am never too sure what to expect from a popular social media reviewer that then tackles what they review and grade. Daniel is very good at what he does on YouTube and rarely seems to allow his biases to infect his book reviews, so I was certainly looking forward to his Primum Conatus. It is an enjoyable story, it flows well and has an unexpected conclusion, so in that, it gets the Three Star Treatment from me.
It was a little confusing that there was minimal world building exposition nor location description; what there was, was very cursory. As well, it seemed as if Mr. Greene had a better idea of the characterizations of his three main characters, but seemed as if he were holding back. In fact, in just one paragraph towards the end, he gives Captain Williams more characterization, it seems, than the other characters over the entirety of the book. Knowing he had planned two more novellas, I was thinking perhaps he was holding off on fleshing out the others until the next one, though it seems as if this will not happen.
None of these critiques will keep me from reading his next books, and I look forward to seeing the improvements that are likely to come!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK first attempt
Reviewed in the United States on 8 April 2021

I love Donald Greene and I'm very proud of him for putting out this first book, an accomplishment I hope to do one day. However, I just couldn't get into it. The characters were either flat or common tropes of other characters. This is not an indictment of him, as it's a common mistake first time authors do. It takes time to learn to flesh out characters. The writing was a bit flat at times, even though there were periodic strokes of genius. I do like the magic system and I feel it was well fleshed out, in contrast to many of the characters. It's obvious Donald (OK, Daniel haha) has a lot of potential and I hope to see him improve with his next entries.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Read

After having some time to think about how I feel about this book, here are some thoughts. I thought it was a decent first attempt. There was nothing ground-breaking. It is your standard detective tale with some fantastical elements added in. I thought the characters and the dialogue were well done. However, there are some clunky lines and descriptions in here. I thought the world building was a little flat. Overall, this is one of the better self-published book out there, and I am definitely interested in seeing what else Daniel brings to the table.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for those who dislike gory scenes
Reviewed in the United States on 5 June 2021

This novella opens up with a very graphic scene. If you dislike reading gory imagery, then I recommend skipping this book.

Overall, this was an entertaining novella with a storyline that grabbed my attention enough that I'm looking forward to reading the next book. However, I do have some critiques. 1) I wasn't a big fan of some of the prose he used. At times it seemed like he was writing with a thesaurus. 2) He repeatedly described groups of people as being all powerful and above the law, until they had to deal with a group that was above them. My issue with that is, if there are limits to your authority, then you're not all powerful. 3) Personal preference here, but I dislike when smoking is used to make a character look tough. This is a novella and it seemed like he was throwing away word count to talk about smoking.

3.0 out of 5 stars I rather enjoyed this debut release

I already figured I would dig Greene's style as I've been a fan of his YouTube channel for ages & dig a lot of what he likes. This was competently written, with a few passages or turns of phrase that I really liked or was drawn to. And I was very happy with the character work. I see incredible potential in Greene, as he practices his craft further. I really look forward to reading his future works.

That said, there were a few things that were entirely predictable, whether it was because they were tropey, or just the obvious thing, but that didn't detract much from the enjoyment I got listening/reading this novella.

One a scale of 1-10, with 5 being AVERAGE, I give this a 6.8.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept

Police drama with a twist. The concept of the story was new abs freak, but hard to follow at times of what was going on. Sweet in a more speculative world, it gives enough intrigue, but not quite enough clarity to fully grasp what is going on

No idea what this was supposed to be. A novella showing us a new and interesting world? new fascinating characters? I am not sure it got to show us either. The world is confusing and very vaguely defined. The characters... (spoilers ahead) we won’t be seeing most of them if any of this goes on.

Not a clue how I feel about this. It’s not bad. But I will probably forget about in a couple of days.
