If the student will do the exercises faithfully, and, using a recorder, listen to your playing critically and _kindly_ (I can't emphasize "kindly" enough), then the Bach Cello Suite 1 can be within the grasp of an intermediate-to-advanced student within a reasonable time. Yet a teacher is needed for all but the most motivated, most musical student.
