1) Handle- very comfortable to hold and nice size
2) Design- the double flap should help prevent blow outs and not something I've seen often in this size
3) Size- it's actually bigger than I expected but still small enough not to hit other commuters. Just big enough for 2 people to squeeze under which is impressive.
4) Fabric- feels nice with an almost silk feel. When it arrived it came with an additional bag the umbrella and it's case fitted in. Offers some protection for the handle if it's going to live in a back pack most of the time.
5) Price- $25 is a bit of a no brainer considering it looks and feels like one choosing double or triple that price
6) Durability- At this point it feels solid but being an automatic open and close.... If it's still working perfect in a year then I'll need to add that extra star
- wooden handle
- double canopy
- quite t hick canopy materia
- handy carry bag and it's expandable
- the photos make it seem bigger than what it is
- wish it were bigger
My only small gripe is the handle. I like that it's a solid handle which feels nice in terms of material but is just a tough short to feel comfortable in my hand and is a touch slippery. Having said that it'd add to the size to make it bigger.
Lastly, I'd love a wrist strap on the actual umbrella (particularly because it is a little slippery). There is one on the cover but not the umbrella itself.
Another pleasant surprise was the size of it. Small enough to fit in the side of my door but well and truly big enough to fit my self and a backpack underneath it - couldn't recommend it anymore! Stop waiting and buy it!!
As a few other reviewers have noticed, there's no wrist strap, and I worry a bit about this -- it feels like the one potential design flaw. I haven't tried it out in high winds to test, but the handle is substantial and does fit very well to my hands; my gut feeling is that it won't be a problem to hold onto. I'll edit this if it does become an issue (plus, you'll see a loose umbrella flying about town).
The design is great and the wooden handle on a travel-size umbrella? That is so unique and it just feels very luxurious! Which is great, considering that it's sold at an affordable price!
I really like how it's super easy to fold it back and fit it in its case, I usually have a lot of issues doing that with my past umbrellas.
The open/close button is also something that I thought was incredibly unique!
I would love to give it a 5 star but while it is travel size, due to the larger wooden handle, it doesn't fit into my handbag, but it does fit into all my other normal sized backpacks! Plus, it unfolds into a really big umbrella, so it's amazing that it can fold into such a small thing.
Top international reviews
My first impressions are that this is a well-designed and high-quality item, particularly when put side-by-side with a similarly priced umbrella from a well-known drugstore. The item came well packaged to protect the canopy and wood handle, and has enough heft to inspire confidence. The handle is made of a lovely dark wood, and is perfectly smooth with no imperfections or rough spots. It is exactly the right size for my (average-sized) hand which is a huge positive given how uncomfortable the tiny travel-style umbrella handles can be. The umbrella comes in a matching sleeve, which rather uniquely has a zip down the side to make it easier to get on and off - a small detail but suggests the thought and consideration put into the design of the product. Overall it is very elegantly designed and put together -they haven’t just slapped some fancy script font on a cheap brolly, but have paid attention to the details such as stitching that help it seem a bit more ‘high-end’.
The umbrella itself is similarly well designed - pressing the open/close button expands the canopy forcefully, revealing the sturdy metal and fibreglass frame. It is definitely a step up from the standard, thin metal ribs you’ll find on a cheap model which gives me confidence this will last more than a few trips around windy West Yorkshire! The canopy is vented, which allows wind to pass through rather than stressing the umbrella frame - this is a great feature and definitely helps, although no brolly is really wind-proof so just bear that in mind. The canopy fabric is pretty standard and blocks water just fine - the light blue colour looks very handsome in person and goes well with the wood handle. Pressing the button again snaps the canopy shut, again with some force, which helps shake off excess raindrops. The brolly requires a surprising amount of force to fully retract into the collapsed form - on the one hand this is reassuring as it’s all very sturdy, but I do wonder if having such strong springs in the frame may raise the risk of something breaking down the line. However after years of flimsy umbrellas breaking on me I’d rather take my chances with something that might be ‘too strong’!!
Overall I am very very impressed with this product - it has every feature I was looking for (fibreglass ribs, vented canopy) and some I didn’t know I wanted (zip on the sleeve)! It seems well-made and sturdy enough to last, without being too heavy and while having an elegant, smart appearance. My only possible note for improvement would be to add a carrying loop/strap to the handle itself - the included sleeve has a loop attached but it would be better for it to be on the umbrella handle itself so the brolly can be hung to dry. Such a minor point really, and definitely not a deal breaker by any means. This would be an exceptional product for £30, so for under £20 it’s one of the best deals out there.
Well, I can tell you one thing straight away: Balios Umbrellas are *not* your average umbrella. As a lover of the finer things in life, I was absolutely delighted by the softness and beauty of the wooden handle, and as soon as I opened it up, it was clear this was a well-made, superior product that wouldn't let me down. Luckily (in a sense) it arrived through the post before I had to take my kids to school, and - this being England - it has already started to rain quite heavily. I pushed the button on the handle, my new umbrella unfolded itself with a smooth and impressive action, and I was off.
Not only did I look great walking down the road with this elegant accessory, I was kept dry and safe from the downpour, too. The vents in the canopy allow the wind to move slightly through the umbrella, meaning there was never any danger of the item turning inside out and dragging me along the road. I was seriously impressed.
I also love the smooth and sturdy mechanism of this device - it locks very satisfyingly back into place when you're done with it, and from there, you can keep it in its attractive carry case. I'm an absolute convert, and seriously won over the by affordable price and quality of this item. I would actually like to buy one for all my family members, too!
The first thing that caught my eyes was that it had two covers,
then the Qoute on the tag - When it rains look for rainbows. I thought that’s nice.
Then the care taken to protect the wooden handle even though it came with two covers. The handle was wrapped with a semi hard paper.
I love the look and feel of the handle, nice to hold.
The umbrella has some weight to it, making It feel really strong, the cover is made with two layers, I am guessing it acts as a wind breaker. This is my first time owning one made like this.
As a woman they won me over, and I don’t usually give reviews to this detail unless I am overly happy with the product.
I have taken photos to help anyone who is thinking of buying this especially as a present. Plan was to give this out as a prezzy.
I can’t say if it will stand the rain, but I have no doubt that it wouldn’t . It’s definitely good quality and has been carefully designed.
Yep! It has my 5 star. Fast delivery too with prime. I will happily recommend to others.
The first time I used it, was in moderate winds and rain (in June!) and it turned inside out instantly.
It doesn't even open fully, as in poor design means it's not flush and tight when fully extended like a good quality umbrella should be.
Don't waste your money.
- Stylish design: compared to other umbrellas, I've found it quite beautiful from close look. I think the stylish handle makes it unique and look luxury. Holding the handle is comfortable.
- Auto-open button: the button to open and close worked absolutely fine. It's quite handy. To shrink it back inside, I don't need a huge force. On other side, its robust, and compared to other umbrellas I don't feel its loose and breakable.
- Dries fast: in my experience the umbrella dried pretty quickly. Only few minutes of leaving it open would suffice to get fully dried.
- Good size: I always wanted an umbrella which is huge when opened and relatively small when closed. I think this umbrella fits in this respect quite well. It does protect you from rain when open, and becomes good small size when closed.
- Good cover: the cover is very nicely made, and has a good zipper. I use its loop around my wrist to have the umbrella. The loop size is not too small, and not too big to make it loose: its quite fit.
I haven't found any downsides yet.
The umbrella was so great that my flatmate also purchased it soon after me.
Therefore, given all the great features I explained, I would very comfortably give a 5-star rating.
I have two suggestions though: the canopy size of the umbrella was much large than expected. I'm quite a small person but even for a large one, the diameter is still huge. As a Londoner, it isn't practical when trying to navigate the streets. The second is the spring function when opening and closing the umbrella. The button is great and the automatic opening is cool, but when you try and click the folded canopy back down into place to close it, it will shoot back up if you can't close it properly - the kickback is unbelievably strong and requires a hefty effort to shut it, so use some caution and don't point it at people while opening and closing.
Due to its sheer size, I think I'll have to give it to my dad!
A couple of improvements they could make:
1. The zipped sleeve is a bit tricky to get off. Having a tag on the closed end to make it easier to grip and pull it off would make that easier.
2. If you click the button to collapse the umbrella, you can't get the umbrella up again without fully closing it first. I go through a narrow alley on my way to work and have to collapse the umbrella if people are coming the other way. Either manually or with the button it is impossible to get the umbrella up again from a partially collapsed state. At least if it could be put up manually it would save having to close a soggy brolly in the rain in order to reopen it.
edit after 4 months of use: material seem high quality but it lived a really short life, it's completely broken without suffered any major pressure stress, won't even stay open, and windproof feature did not help at all, it still flaps a lot of times.
I can't say avoid it, I really enjoyed it while the spring was working, but probably because the form factor and designed mechanics, tbese type umbrellas not supposed to last.
If you value you umbrella quality and lifespan, get yourself a long single frame none folding umbrella, that will always last longer than the folding ones
edit: after few months leaving my review, they contacted me offered a full refund and replacement unit for free to rebuild my confidence
The real wood handle makes the umbrella too heavy, I feel tired after holding it a while. May be it is designed for a few minutes usage, rather than an hour or more.
Under light wind conditions in Vienna city center, the umbrella did flip over with some light wind; however, it was not broken, I could flip it back with ease, and it is as good as new.
In Copenhagen, under typical Copenhagen wind, it just kept flipping over, and I had to point the umbrella to the wind direction to avoid it flipping over all the time. Hence please use with care as usual with all the umbrella. Good thing is that, it is not damaged under strong wind so far.
The push button open and close, it works OK. it is very useful to get into or out of my car or taxi without getting wet.
I would recommend it as there are not many umbrella can resist strong wind without being damaged.
Ok, it’s an umbrella...so can’t get too excited. However I’d bought a ‘windproof’ brolly from another seller that lasted all of 4 footsteps out of my front door before inverting and tearing. Just in time to put it in the wheelie bin.
Pros: this brolly allows the wind through the canopy and doesn’t invert (storm Gareth tested), the press button extend and close action is positive and is super convenient when your other hand is full. Generally feels well made, isn’t heavy, fits in a laptop bag but the canopy is still usable big enough not to get soaked.
Cons: none, save that it’s evidently handy enough to get swiped by everyone else in the house so I’m back to buy another.
