The DVD that accompanys this book is very informative and easy to follow. If you follow course and do all the exercises, you will be playing in no time. I love how each lesson progresses through exercises, to each song at a slow speed, then gradually taking you up to speed. It also really helped me get my slides and hammers down to sounding right.
I started to use another beginner book and wasted three months trying to learn the banjo. A lot of the things I wanted to learn were not in this book, but I found on YouTube. Once I received this book, I threw the other one away. Not only does Banjo Primer teach me everything I wanted to learn, but I'm also being taught by the same person I kept going back to on YouTube !!!!! Yes, Geoff Hohwald is the on the video and explains everything clearly and concise. I recommend this book very highly!!
I found serious errors with this book. For example the fingering for a C chord is wrong; shows using only two fingers when all other sources show using three. Makes me wonder what other errors this book contains I seriously this would be a good book the teaching banjo to beginners.
This is an excellent Edition for those wishing to learn to play the Banjo. It is very well illustrated and has one DVD along with two jam CD's. I purchased this book for my husband, who simply loves banjo music and who is managing to a degree, at this early stage, to follow Geoff Hohwald's instructions, which are clear & concise. I am now finding myself wanting to learn to play the banjo. We live in New Zealand & wish to thank Geoff Hohwald personally for replying to my e-mail and giving me info. on where to purchase this book from, that being through: www.amazon.com. USA. (Their service & communication was excellent). Geoff Hohwald's Video and CD's demonstrate to me, that he is a very clever and talented man who willingly shares his knowledge in a way that is comprehensible to most English speaking people.
The instructional material is well-paced and the helpful hints on HOW to learn and practice are very useful. The fact that this book gives you DVDs, CDs, and downloadable material is great. For the price of one book, you can tap into so many additional resources to learn.
It says it is available on kindle for PC but when i try to open it on there, it says it is not available on kindle PC. that is an issue because I now only have my phone screen to practice on and that is not convenient. Also, if the video and audio discs are not included with the kindle purchase, they did not make that clear, but if it is included, I didn't receive them as far as I am aware. If these issues were cleared up it would be 5/5
This book is exactly what someone who has never played the banjo needs. It is like having your own private instructor who lets you move along at your own pace. I absolutely love it. It is reasonably priced too. The DVD and the CDs included make learning so much fun. I am a 71 year old senior who has never played an instrument before.
