I'll use my Maglight flashlight as an example. (it's designed for D cells).
Put your AA batteries in these adapters. Great. They are now the size of a D cell battery EXCEPT for the ass-end of the battery which is still just the size of an AA battery. You follow? My Maglight has a large spring at the bottom that screws onto the flashlight like any other flashlight. The problem is that the spring at the narrow end, which is to make contact with the (-) end of the battery is looped larger than the AA batter that it would now be connecting with. I solved this problem by putting a dime in the end loop of the spring, but it was a little precarious to get it to stay in place while I screwed the end back on. Had to try like 4 different times until is stayed in place ..
Also, keep in mind that AA's dont last as long as D's.
One small glitch I came across with the D cell MagLite is that the battery contact spring did not touch the small negative side of the holder due to the spring design. The simple fix was to place a quarter between the spring and the battery to ensure constant contact.
