It's designed well and have had no issues with it. Paid extra to have a quality dripless bottle and that is what I received.
This thing is indeed leakproof, so much that it doesn't dispense water to my guinea pig.
Before I continue, the thing that makes this "leakproof" is a little rubber ring inside the water bottle so water can't pass through the two metal balls when not in use.
When I first got this I was thrilled that this would rid me of anymore problems with leaky water bottles. I put it in my piggies cage and it worked perfectly, no leaking, she got her water easily. Well the next day I filled her water and 8 hours later noticed she hadn't drank any of her water.
Upon further inspection I noticed that the metal ball that my piggy pushes to get her water, was stuck up in the tube because it got caught on the rubber ring.
I fixed it, but every time I fixed it the same thing would happen the second my piggy would try to drink. And for that reason I have to give this 1 star.
And I did take out the rubber ring, and haven't had any major issues since, but I don't see how this issue isn't more common unless people aren't noticing.
But then, I noticed that my rats were sometimes desperately struggling to get water. At first, I thought maybe it was due to the narrow water passage getting blocked with algae or whatever, and tried intensive cleaning, soaking in disinfectants, blowing air and water through the tube, etc. Sometimes, that helped, but on a few of the nozzles, nothing seemed to help: there seems to be a little tube inside the main tube, and in some of the nozzles that little tube is too loose and slips down all the way to the ball when I hang the bottle on the cage. Then, practically no water can get through to my rats, although they keep trying to drink.
So far, I haven't lost any rats to dehydration, but it is clear that they have frequently suffered due to the design of this product. I love my pets, and it broke my heart to realize that they were silently dying from thirst with a nearly full water bottle hanging in front of them, with no way to ask me for help. Now, I have to constantly check the levels in the bottles, to make sure that they are getting water, and when I see them drinking, watch for bubbles to make sure that water is getting though. There are some nozzles that work intermittently, some always and some that now don't seem to work no matter how much i clean them and try to reposition the little tube. It's so sad, because there was many things I liked about this product, but I cannot recommend it to anyone if sometimes your pet won't be able to get any water out of it.
UPDATE: the company had shipped me a new water bottle. I am very excited because this is the first no drip water bottle I've ever found. I will be careful not to tighten it to much. They appreciated me original feedback and emailed me. Very nice helpful people. Got my water bottle with spare parts from the company with a hand written note from Betty!!!!!!! What an awesome great company.
Update: Betty at Choco Nose was really great! She sent out a replacement bottle after five months of using the original one. I'll give this new one a try and see what happens. Their customer service is awesome.
Update: The new one leaks just as bad as the first one did. This bottle seems so high-quality too!
It uses two ballbearings to supposedly make it leak-proof. I even tried adding a third ballbearing, but it didn't make it any better.
I think a better design would be a single ballbearing with a long sprung inside the tube to keep pressure on the ballbearing at the end of the tube. Use a spring similar to the ones found inside a ballpoint pen, except long enough to touch the back end of the tube and the ballbearing at the other end.
The reason why we buy the H128 (old model) was because it had a longer nozzle than the other Choco Nose models. Longer nozzle works better with C&C cages since the coroplast part of the cage is already approx 6 inches tall. The water bottles must now be placed lower so our guinea pigs can actually reach the new, shorter nozzle. Plus, when attached outside the grid bars, the nozzle sticks through so much less than the other model, unfortunately.
Please keep this in mind when replacing the older model with their redesigned H128. Also unfortunately they aren’t letting their customers know this fact or that there were even any known dangerous defects in the older model (ie ball randomly getting stuck and no water dispensing).
I will say that this is the best “no-leak” water bottle I have ever come across, which is great, but as one review on here showed pictures: the little plastic straw inside the nozzle gets full of mold and algae and is hard/impossible to clean! ChocoNose doesn’t tell you this though. Check out that other review that provided pictures after she took apart the nozzle thoroughly and you’ll see what I mean.
