You can get some of this information off the net, but here you have it all in on place. The book is well written and informative. I would recommend all beginners to get this book I bought this book together with "Bluegrass banjo for the complete ignoramus" , a different way of teaching but very usefull.
O.K. noob So you want to learn banjo. Well, take my word as a beginner myself that this is a book that will get you going on the right track. Banjo is fun and rewarding but does take time and patience Evans book does a lot of the why answers to help you along. Trust me I didn't know which side the banjo the strings were on, now with this book and some steady practice I'm playing tunes and having fun. All in all, I say GO-FOR- IT, You will not be disappointed
Teaching myself to play the banjo and working through this book slowly. I've gone from dummy to so-so-dummist. Really, it has a lot of excellent information and I've told friends trying to teach themselves to play an instrument to look for a book in this series and to buy it for mandolin, or whatever. Well written. Well illustrated. Haven't made it out of "G" tuning more than twice but that is okay. I'm still building the callouses on my fingers.
Very well put together book. I am a long time guitar player but have never touched a banjo. This book takes you from the very basics and fundamentals of playing the physical instrument while including simple music theory such as chord progressions and how basic song structure works. By the end of the book you will be technically proficient and able to compose your own licks and riffs on the fly. This book is geared toward getting you able to jam comfortably with other musicians.
I have a tendency to not look at the "Dummies" Book because I think the name is degrading. However because I'm familiar with the works of the author I purchased it and Bill is the first person that explained the mechanics of various roll patterns and where to apply them. Great book.
