The inside of Sam Sisavath's head must be an interesting place. His characters talk to themselves - some more than others - and constantly second guess their decisions. I can imagine Cole (his newest hero) and Keo (From Purge of Babylon, Road to Babylon) arguing over who is the most schizophrenic, while the author sits by, waiting for the drama to end and the knives to come out. But these insecure heroes are fallible, human, fun, and oh so deadly. I read The Break in one sitting, and am looking forward to books 2 and 3.
This one is a different take on the end of the world. No ghouls, No vampires or werewolves, but plenty of demonic people trying to kill our hero and the random strangers he's collected. And killing one another, too. Cole used to be a very dangerous man, and some of that is still available. That may be enough, and it may not. Still, this guy is a little different from Sisavath's other heroes, but a little bit like them, too. He's tough and still remembers how to use a pistol, but he's mostly concerned about getting back to his wife and unborn child, so he's a little soft, too. You'll probably like him.
A spectacular new series. Have love most everything this author had written and he had not let me down this time. Exciting and intriguing. What the heck is going on. Such a grand start for this series. Get it right away so you can be on at the beginning. A great read.
Sam Sisaveth must have gotten a great creative gene. His books always leave you wanting the next one and the next. The Break is another great start to a series by Sam. Cole's whole world changes when the crazies come out. Trying to stay alive and get to his wife is a struggle. The person in his head helps him and then doesnt. Not sure about how I feel about the talking head conversations. Love the characters banding together...let's see where they go next.
Read many of Mr. Sisavath's books and have enjoyed them. This one had a writing technique I found annoying and distracting. The protagonist has a near constant dialogue with an inner "VOICE", as he calls it. Maybe it was supposed to be amusing or informative. Distracting, annoying and worse, boring is how I found it. Love me a good apocalypse/zombie style story. But, this one I quit on at less than 25% in.
What makes these books so good is that the author gets us inside the head of the main character and that's when we find out other people think funny and strange things from time to time. His dialog always flows and his action always has just enough violence and gore to satisfy the horror fans while not getting ridiculous and keeping it a bit more real for those of us who know that every injury does not result in gushers of blood and guts. Its another end of the world zombie apocalypse with quite the interesting twist on the "zombies"...not sure we can call them that...Enjoy the book!
The key point of the story is a guy trying to get home during a catastrophe. Still a fairly original theme. I think being asleep was the key to not being a "Crazy", hopefully explained in better detail in the next book. The "Voice" heard thru out the novel did get a little repetitive and annoying, I get the point. TO get home to Emily and Bear Lake. But still an enjoyable start to a new series for this author.
Love this author and happy he has started a new adventure. The first book was incredible, read in one sitting. Will order the next installment immediately. One man with skills trying to get home through a world gone insane.
Cole is just trying to get home to his pregnant wife. He celebrated the retirement from his company and fell asleep on his way home. He woke up to a nightmare. People are no longer normal and have turned into crazies. Cole and some other survivors are trying their hardest to get him home. This would make an excellent film and I can't wait for the next book!!
