Product description
This barnstorming 20-song, 3 LP set of previously unreleased music is culled from four shows (London, Brighton, Sheffield and Newcastle) which were part of a 1977 tour across the UK in support of Rory’s then latest album 'Calling Card'. Featuring fantastic live versions of tracks from that album as well as from 1975’s 'Against The Grain' and other live favourites, has been mixed from the original multitrack tapes from the official Rory Gallagher archive and mastered for this release at Abbey Road Studios.

Long time fan and got to see him play several times in Sydney, Australia. Made me go deeper into the blues and Rory related music. 74 Irish tour album was got me started, and from there on got most of his albums and dvds. Miss his presence as he made it so simple , total powerhouse of a player and a great and generous man.

FINALLY, a posthumous release that delivers the Rory we knew as fans
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2020Verified Purchase
Don't get me wrong - I love all the stuff that Rory's estate has dug out over the years (with the possible exception of all the studio album remixes in the 90s... but that's thankfully been fixed since then).
But I have felt only "ok, that's nice" about most of the posthumous releases. I'm very grateful to have them. For example, "Blues" a few months back is very tasteful and I would recommend it to anyone. But these "extras" from the vaults have all kind of diluted my "Rory thing" over the years.
But this release today has got me in tears. I feel 17 again. THIS is the Rory we were going to see back then. THIS release generates the excitement we felt going to the gigs and hearing the albums for the first time.
How does it compare to original live albums?
If you own and love Live in Europe and wish there was another live album that was as "relaxed" and "honest"...
If you own and love Irish Tour 74 but wish it was as a***-kicking and "rock" as Stage Struck...
If you own and love Stage Struck but wish it was as sweet and "blues" as Irish Tour 74...
... then this is the album for you. This is the live album you wish he'd released.
There's the odd place where the tuning on his strat slips, but nothing too bad (Walk on Hot Coals intro, you can hear it's only "good enough for rock and roll" ... lol ... but it IS good enough, and it doesn't spoil it). In a few places the band is not as tight as maybe Rory would've wanted if he'd been producing... but the flipside to this is that the four of them are incredibly relaxed and laying it all down with complete abandon. It's an exhilarating ride, just like the gigs were. And Rory's vocals - we all concentrate on the guitar playing - his vocals on this album are SUPERB.
Old fan very happy here. Five Stars to all involved.

It's 2020 and we've got yet another posthumous Rory Gallagher live release. We seem to be getting a lot of these things and honestly, I'm not complaining one bit. This new one is titled, Check Shirt Wizard – Live In ‘77 and is a two disc collection of twenty songs, all recorded during the guitarists 1977 "Calling Card" UK tour. The songs are taken from a selection of dates including London, Brighton, Sheffield and Newcastle.
Check Shirt Wizard – Live In ‘77, is a great live album. It's not quite as extensive as the recently released triple disc collection, Blues or as mandatory as Irish Tour '74 (both worth your money if you don't have them). But what it delivers is what I'd expect from a Gallagher live release. Everything is expertly played, the vocals are coarse but passionate, the backing band are solid and the guitar solos are as equally mind bending as they are beautiful. Typically, there's a wide variety of song styles here. There's plenty of big riff hard rocking tunes, a few slower bluesier numbers. Others have a mid tempo almost funk groove and there's some nice acoustic songs for good measure.
The sound quality of the album is pretty much spot on. There's no real reasons to dislike this album on a technical level. The sound isn't too loud, it's all as clear as day but still has the adequate amount of punch you'd expect from a hard rock record. I didn't find any instances of tape warp, volume dips or any other damage that we sometimes get from archival releases. All things considering, this one is right on the money and sounds fantastic.
To be blunt and straight to the point, if you like Rory Gallagher's music, there's no reason whatsoever not to buy Check Shirt Wizard – Live In ‘77. It's a fantastic two hour long set that delivers exactly what we should expect from the legendary guitarist. It's not necessarily a great starting point for new fans, but if you do want to start here, you could certainly do a lot worse. This is a great album.

Rory Rory, tell us a story. And what a story it is.

Wow, how did this not get released before now. This is already an absolute classic in the making.
Recorded in Jan & Feb 1977 in support of the excellent Calling Card album, it is easily amongst the best live releases in the mighty Rory canon. Although a few tracks from this tour have been released before on the BBC sessions album from 20 years ago, non of these versions have been released before. 20 tracks in all, covering the whole breadth of his solo material to date at the time of recording, the quality never subsides. From full on electric boogie (Bullfrog Blues & Secret Agent) to more intimate acoustic tracks such as Out on the Western Plain & Too Much Alcohol it has it all, including a really excellent version of A Million Miles Away. The recording quality is top notch. It also features several rare live versions of tracks not otherwise on his other live alums, such as Edged In Blue & Barley Grape Rag.
The fact that these recordings have never seen the light of day before now is criminal. I highly recommend this and I hope that there is more of this quality in the can for later release in the not too distant future.
Buy it now, you will not be disappointed

Nice One Rory...

This is a brilliant record of a band at the top of it's game and Rory still in his 20's. The quality of the recording is excellent and the source material put together so well you'd hardly notice it's from 4 gigs. The 'Spotify' generation will sadly miss the point of this but you have to sit down, turn it up and listen from start to finish. This is how his gigs flowed. This was and should be the excitement and passion of a live gig. No overdubs or patch-ups on this recording and almost telepathic band interplay at times. Thanks to Rory Estate for this release. Marvellous.

fitting testament of 4 mans band
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2020Verified Purchase
after the demise of Taste Gallagher went solo and opted for the same format, a power trio, with him on vocals and guitar, a bass player and drummer, with which he recorded two studio albums and the Live In Europe. Thereafter he switched the drummer for Rod D'Ath plus added a piano player Lou Martin, who fit brilliantly in this band. With this new outfit het recorded in the studio Blue Print and Tattoo, and the legendary Irish Tour. Afterwards Against The Grain and Calling Card. Somehow there the story of this four piece band stopped. This band went to the West coast of USA to record another album but this was not released at the time [now available as Notes From San Francisco] and shortly after, dissatisfied with the results, he disbanded the quartet. So after 43 years (!) in comes this double album with live recordings, culled from 4 concerts in the first months of 1977, being the last with D'Ath and Martin, on piano and organ. A lot of the set list (20 tracks) stems from the latter albums, with for good measure throwing in classics from the earlier live albums. No real surprises though, like for instance "Tore Down", which was part of the live performance for some time in the seventies and not taken from any of the studio albums (now to be found on The Beat club sessions, Live At Montreux or BBC Sessions as a studio recording and finally on Blues from 2019) . So all in all this new live album is in more than a way a fitting testament for Gallagher and his then 3 man backing band in which a great share was taken by the now late Lou Martin who's piano and organ playing added an extra touch and dimension to the music. For those who are familiar with the album output so far nothing is new. Each of the 20 songs is well known already. Some have a new arrangement by adding keyboards, while those from Against The Grain and Calling Card receive a welcome live treatment. It seems that these recordings were intended for another live album but 3 in a row in only a couple of years was simply too much. Almost any band in the seventies released a live album, and likewise Gallagher had his share already, with Live In Europe and Irish Tour, so a third album so soon was exuberant. (At that time unknown yet it was soon (1980) to be followed by another live release, Stragestruck). What more can be said of this CSW set? The sound quality is fine, the songs speak for them selves and are well performed. But somehow it lacks a real drive. It has certainly not the energy of the earlier live albums. For the band playing live was business a usual, in two or 3 months they captured Great Britain and played in so many towns, before going to the main land or abroad to the USA again. At the end of 1977 this format did not exist anymore, in came a new drummer and changed the musical style towards hard rock. So therefore this album is a document of the music which was made from 1972 till 1977 by 4 people who related to one another: Gallagher, McAvoy (bass), D'Ath and Martin. ,
