Bought this for my 10 year old grandson, who is interested in coding. He wanted to code in text rather than using Scratch and Python is free, available on many platforms and easy to get immediate feedback from. I think this will work for him as he has already started playing with the turtle graphics. I have done programming of a limited nature in many languages and Python is my favorite for most things, there are even versions like micropython, circuitpython for embedded controllers. This will get him started in a real language with lots of possibilities.
So far, the first animal quiz does not work. Copied exactly as the book shows. Anyone else have problems with this or other programs in this book?
*Updated review: I like it, but I am not experienced with python at all. I had no one to ask questions and was grateful that they included the website to download programs which is where I also was able to look up FAQs. This helped, but my daughters were able to find the solution in the book faster. I take it back, this book is definitely worth it. Indentions are more important than I thought. ;)
Good luck to all other moms and dads trying to encourage their kids to learn something new and useful. If you get stuck, as the kids for help :D
The book would totally be 5 stars if it worked. I'm learning python, and I figured I'd start with the basics to get me started. Well I'm half way in and a handful of codes keep giving me errors, either the indents are off ( off the book)... or idk... I would even copy the reference codes in the back of the book and still would have silly errors on some projects. I'm very thankful for Pythons discord page for helping me with my basic issues, but they kept saying the same the " Why would you do it like that?" than they'd show me a different/better way.
If the second half is better I will update, if not.... Than make that 3 stars a 2. It explains things very well, but again error after error.
I initially bought the book as a gift for Christmas. Unfortunately, instead of my little brother using it, I've used it more! I have read multiple python beginner's books and this one really gets into the detail of the syntaxes. "Adult" python books are normally dry and you become disinterested after an hour of reading it. This book is the complete opposite and you'll read it and follow along for hours... I highly recommend it both young and old.
This is supposed to be a book on coding projects for Python including on an android phone.
1. NO installation instructions whatsoever. 2. No installation files for Python on Android at python dot org either. 3. Coding errors throughout the book, so much that I just stopped following along. 4. Most of the little programs didn't work on Python on Windows either. 5. After the first two or three programs they become a LOT harder. 6. Steep learning curve after the first 10 pages.
