Really good device and a perfect add-on to the great range of Breville espresso machines - I have the Breville infuser for reference. This has totally replaced the use of the normal tamper for me and would really recommend providing that you have a consistent way of getting the same amount of coffee into the portafilter each time.
Definitely recommend this, for anyone looking to save time. This is the future!

It is adjustable for the depth and was simple to do ( I placed on a level surface and using my leveling tool from Breville matched to depth and then tightened the tool back up). I’m happy that I did not go with the more expensive ones on amazon thinking it would be better as this was perfect. I will recommend this to anyone having problems with tamps or wants to simplify the tamp and level process in their espresso making.
BUT, it comes without ANY kind of instructions. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
Clearly, one can go online and find video of how to use this kind of implement, but really, it should come with some sort of instructions.
We figured out HOW to adjust it, but are not really clear on how much adjustment is necessary, if that makes sense.
Suggestion to seller/manufacturer: INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!
Background: I'm sure I'm one of many coffee addicts stuck at home who decided to take the plunge and invest in a serious setup. I'm using a 54mm triple basket with bottomless portafilter, and though I have a few years practice casually pulling shots on the Nuova Simonelli semi-automatic machines at work, I'm hardly skilled. I've been struggling with some channeling that results in spurting and uneven extraction - with the bottomless filter you can really see all the problems. Someone recently got a leveler at work and I found it useful, so I decided to give this one a try. I tried various depth adjustments ranging from a very light sweep to a bit of compression.
Build wise, it seems fine. It's all metal, sturdy and easy to adjust. No complaints.
In use, the shots were all over the place - channeling to the sides, lots of edge spurting etc. Taste-wise it was also a crapshoot with a tendency to come out watery. My conclusion is that the 3-vane design just isn't very effective. It ends up compressing things unevenly when you set it down, and it doesn't spread well radially, which is kind of the most necessary thing right after a grind. I tried doing a pre-level with my finger or a shake/tap, but it was still a crapshoot. The fit in the 54mm basket also seemed a little loose, leaving the edges uneven.
I decided to return it and spend 6x as much on a hand-made leveler, which honestly seems preposterous but wow, what a difference. The new one uses a proprietary wedge shape that creates a perfectly polished and flat puck every time, and the difference in extraction was night and day - I'm getting way better flavor and balance. I still end up tamping, but it's made much easier - you can feel it go straight down. My cortados are tasting amazing, and my wife, who really is mostly interested in the caffeine value, even noted that her iced mochas tasted better. I'm not saying it's necessary to spend so much on such a simple device - most of the cost is due to the fact that it's handmade in the US and has beautiful materials - but there's simply no comparison in the performance.
Anyway YMMV but this one wasn't a keeper for me.
This tool is a solid, quality piece. It exceeded my expectations. Take it apart. Solid metal, stainless steel coated, and aluminum. Excellent finish. No burrs.
It is easy to adjust. It adjusts the same way the $150 ones do. However, it may take several “tunings” to get the depth right. Especially if you are trying to eliminate tamping. I recommend setting this next to your tamper, and adjusting the depth to match. Then, make small adjustments from there.
