I had to repair my violin recently when a seam under the endpin button opened up. I decided to replace my strings as well and moved up to these Pro-Artés from Preludes. These Pro-Artés are a very pleasant surprise! They sound good and I like them. The biggest surprise was the E string which was a significant improvement over any strings I had used previously. The strings have to be tuned every day after being initially installed as they stretch quite a bit but they eventually settled down. They are also reasonably priced so you can get a decent sound without spending $100.
Love the sound. My violin really ressonates the secondary vibrations. My older strigs irritated my ears and in the end my teacher told me to change the string cause it was too much. These string leave just the right amount of vibration for my violin
The item came in sealed pouches which is great. Before changing the string, I made audio recording with the existing steel core string, then I changed the strings one by one and made another recording. This one is definitely better. a) As specified, the sound is dark as expected from nylon core string. b) I like the fact that this is not loud. If you want a set for solo performance, then maybe Pirastro Evah Pirazzi will be better but it is much more costly. I am not that good and just play for my own personal pleasure so this just suits me fine. Shar music site has a guide. c) The bowing is much more smooth. It is a pleasure. Unfortunately, my el cheapo rosins are no longer any good. Time to upgrade. Maybe that dark rosin made by D'Addario. d) I selected ball end set. The receptor hooks of my violin was a bit narrow. Using a scissor, I widened that a bit. Imagine U. I made it Y. Of course, you violin may not have that issue. e) The screeching E string. Yes, it is real. However, I play it closer to the bridge. That got rid of the screeching. f) Unlike my steel core strings, this requires fine tuning every now and then. However, it might not happen with your violin. g) The G string might sound a bit lower than D string when you play the same notes by shifting up. However, it might be the case that my tuning pegs are slipping (and needs to be replaced). (update: I increased the tension of the strings and it seems ok now. Unfortunately, the ball end snapped. I fixed it temporarily by creating a knot and used the knotted end like a loop end.)
Overall, a good set, that does not burn the pocket, a pleasure to bow. Violin is difficult and anything that makes it a breeze without breaking the bank is always welcome.
Update 2: After one year, the G string really sounded weak when shifting up. I have replaced it with Thomastik Dominant G string with perlon code and silver winding. Now shifting up is a breeze.
after 1 week of installation, the G string start splitting, the other strings are fine. and sound are nice, so I think the G string is not strong enough. it's good for beginners to intermediate learner.
These strings are ok for the price, not terrible or impressive. They seem somewhat crudely made, the windings feel rough under the fingers. For a few dollars more, the Pirastro Violinos might be a better choice for a mellow sounding string set. They seem to produce a richer more interesting tone.
