Is duty enough reason to live a lie? When John meets Savannah, he realises he is ready to make some changes. Always the angry rebel at school, he has enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life. Now he's ready to turn over a new leaf for the woman who has captured his heart. What neither realises is that the events of 9/11 will change everything. John is prompted to re-enlist and fulfil what he feels is his duty to his country.
But the lovers are young and their separation is long. Can they survive the distance?

I know the book from the start to end, and the book was kind of a surprise in some parts, as it's slightly different but no less wonderful!

Good easy read

After a lapse in reading for various reasons, I decided to kick start my passion for reading again sticking to an author I know I've loved in the past. This book was good but I don't have any gushing words I can pass on. It was an easy read and was a safe bet in helping me rediscover my love for page turning, but I also found a craving to start discovering new authors.

Beautifully written love story

I loved the movie of Dear John that I immediately ordered this novel so I could wallow in John and Savannah's world a little more! Nicholas Sparks creates such true to life characters that you really feel you are a part of this world in North Carolina and following John on his postings. It was a little different from the movie which was interesting to see how the original had been changed. I felt the novel conveyed more depth in Savannah and I grasped far more about her choices. Nicholas Sparks creates an excellent narrator in John who draws the reader in to his world and relationships. I most enjoyed John's relationship with his father which the author examined very sensitively, and showed a good knowledge of the autism spectrum without being patronising. This is such a great read and so sad yet so heartwarming. I've definitely become a Nicholas Sparks fan!

True love

Once again I am just thrilled with this novel. Nicholas Sparks seems to understand every human emotion and for me this story rang so true. For him to write with the intensity of emotion shown in this book shows the true understanding of human pain and loss. Beautiful story, written with ferling.

Amazing Writer and Story Teller.

Watched the film adaptation first, then read the book. This novel may not have the ending that a lot of readers would like but I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of buying and reading about John and Savannah's love story. There is also plenty of potential for a follow-up novel if Nicholas Sparks ever decides to write one. Thank you to the author for another page turner and a beautiful but emotional love story.
