3.0 out of 5 stars Sub-par encoding performance

This is the fifth HDMI encoder I have tried in my never-ending quest to improve the quality of my video archives. Sadly, it did not live up to its potential.

The first thing I did was see if it could capture 1080i@60hz video from my set-top box. It does, but only encodes the stream at a frame rate of 30 FPS, just like an older 30 FPS HDMI encoder would. This introduces a mild stuttering effect that is most noticeable in long panning scenes and in news/stock tickers. I'm beginning to think no encoder will achieve a 60 FPS output from this source, since the only encoder I've tried that succeeded clearly wasn't deinterlacing properly.

More importantly, I found that the quality of the produced video leaves much to be desired. I have submitted screen captures comparing a 32 Mbps CBR (constant-bitrate) stream from the J-Tech encoder with a 12 Mbps CBR stream from an older competing product. By all rights, the J-Tech's video quality should be nearly lossless at this bit rate, but this was not the case. It encodes high-contrast details just fine, but low-contrast areas get blurred and much detail is lost.

Finally, this encoder does something strange that causes video to be slightly stretched vertically such that about 8 pixels of the image's bottom are pushed off-screen and lost. Most people would not notice this. I wouldn't even have noticed this if I had not been doing a direct side-by-side comparison with a different encoder! It is possible that this only occurs with a 1080i input source.

These problems are nothing that shouldn't be fixable with new firmware. I asked J-Tech for newer firmware, but none was available (device came with version 2.36).

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome device. Highly recommended!!

I am running 4 Amazon FireTV sticks. They are each connected to a Goronya HDMI 4X1 Quad Multi-Viewer and decoded by the J-Tech Digital H.264 Encoder that puts the streams on the network. A SiliconDust HDHomerun duo provides OTA TV through the FireTV app.

I use VLC as my video streaming software. It allows watching 4 streams simultaneously anywhere on the network on any (and multiple) devices simultaneously. It also lets me cast the same streams to monitors that are not connected to a PC or other device.

The FireTV sticks are remote controlled from anywhere on the network with the Fire TV android app. the FireTV remotes (four of them) aren't used at all.

When running 4 HD programs at the same time our Internet load varies from 30-60mb on our 100mb Internet service.

The J-Tech Digital Encoder handles all this tomfoolery without complaint with very high quality video and sound. It is a really awesome device. Highly recommended!!
