I’m sharing my impressions of Don Francisco’s Whole Bean French Roast Coffee.
First, this is whole bean. You will need to grind it. The point of whole beans is to increase the fresh taste of the coffee, so you will need to grind the beans immediately prior to brewing. I agree that whole beans make a fresher tasting coffee, but at the cost of grinding the beans each time you brew.
This is French Roast – by definition, this is much darker, more robust than most people are accustomed to. This is closer to espresso than your regular blend of coffee. You need to appreciate the slightly bitter taste of French Roast to enjoy this coffee.
The beans were whole and had a slightly oily surface which is characteristic of French Roast coffee. They were easy to grind and were uniform medium to fine after grinding.
The coffee had a typical French Roast taste – it does leave a slight bitter aftertaste, again this is what you would expect.
This is an excellent price for the grade of coffee.
Before buying, understand the French Roast taste profile and make sure you are okay with the extra effort of grinding the beans.
I like this coffee a lot. It has flavor, though nothing particularly stands out about it. It's a solid cup of coffee suitable for everyday drinking. I'm finishing up my third bag of this coffee, and I haven't thought about it much. That's a good sign for an everyday coffee. If you just want a reliable cup without too many frills, then this might be a good option for you.
I decided that I could only give this coffee four stars because it markets itself as a French roast, yet it doesn't really taste like a French roast. French roast is supposed to be very dark, almost burnt. Sure, the beans are pretty dark (though I've seen darker). But this coffee doesn't taste particularly dark to me. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just saying that I would have expected a French roast to have a smokier flavor.
If you want a true French roast, you might want to avoid these beans, but if you're looking for a solid everyday coffee at a relatively affordable price, I think you might want to give these a try.
Is it drinkable? Yes, it is. It's not the worst coffee I've had by a long shot. And the price point might be right for you. But is this going to be a regular feature in my home? likely not.
This coffee starts my morning off nicely. I could use a little more caffeine even with my 2-3 cups. It has a nice aroma that has an ever so slight hint of chocolate. It is pleasing to the senses and has a nice taste. Each brew has been consistent. I think this is a nice choice to serve guests or as a daily coffee.
First thing to note- it’s whole bean so you need a grinder. It’s french roast, so it’s dark and bitter (a good thing in my book). The flavor profile is “Smokey with chocolate tones”- which I’d say is pretty accurate.
I brewed it in my French press- and this just made for a really smooth cup of coffee. Perfect for what I want. I plan to cold brew it also, but I’m expecting fantastic results. At a little less than $7 a bag- I think it’s a great deal. Would recommend for dark coffee lovers.
There is no bitterness as found in other brands of dark roasts (ie Starbucks). It's a nice blend and the organic part is a huge selling point. This coffee is versatile and I enjoy it.
Yum! Will purchase again.
This roast has a nice aroma and flavor. It is not overpowering.
The whole beans come in a resealable bag.
I love having a fresh cup of quality coffee every day in my own home. This coffee is delicious. I highly recommend it!
I don't care for fancy coffees. I like my coffee to taste like coffee! Good to the last drop! Oooops, that's another brand.
