There is depth in here for sure, and having read the first book I am pushed to continuing on with the series, but not before taking a short break. I find this grand writing style a bit tedious at times and the works a little too arcane. I suppose the author tries to convey a sense of grandeur, and the weight of history through this style, but I find it all a bit confusing at times. It would have had more impact if explained more outright rather than having to dig for explanations in the appendix or online.
Still, a great novel (and excellent audio book), and I’m looking forward to seeing how the next 2 books of the original trilogy compare to this first one.

The Duke of Atreides has been manoeuvred by his arch-enemy, Baron Harkonnen, into administering the desert planet of Dune. Although it is almost completely without water, Dune is a planet of fabulous wealth, for it is the only source of a drug prized throughout the Galactic Empire. The Duke and his son, Paul, are expecting treachery, and it duly comes - but from a shockingly unexpected place. Then Paul succeeds his father, and he becomes a catalyst for the native people of Dune, whose knowledge of the ecology of the planet gives them vast power. They have been waiting for a leader like Paul Atreides, a leader who can harness that force . . .DUNE: one of the most brilliant science fiction novels ever written, as engrossing and heart-rending today as it was when it was first published half a century ago.Joint winner of the Hugo Award for best novel, 1966Winner of the Nebula Award for best novel, 1965

Ace 2019 Hardcover is Superb
Reviewed in Australia on 18 January 2020
This is a review of the excellent 2019 mass-market hardcover from Ace. Unfortunately it is glued not smyth-sewn, but I knew that before purchase after doing research, which took a long time comparing all extant hardcovers in print. It would be great if Amazon included binding details in the book profile. That said, the pages open nicely, so the perfect binding is not overly tight. I bought this edition for the beautiful design and in person it really is impressive. The illustrations and text typesetting are gorgeous, and the page margins are spot-on. By the way, I saw that the Folio Society DUNE has huge page margins...a turn-off for me.Book Depository shipped the Ace DUNE to me without inside protection, but luckily it arrived undamaged. I am now looking forward to reading DUNE in 2020 for this first time.

I read this book as part of a bucket list. It has been highly recommended through lots of book lists I have seen. It didn't catch me though. While it wasn't a slog to get through I never felt like I wanted to get home and continue the story either. I could see how a sci fi fan would love the book though, if that is your genre. It was written over 50 years ago now so may be a bit dated.

It's DUNE.....& that means it's awesome but this Deluxe version is nicely finished with lots of nice touches & it also has larger print. Actually the finish is a real highlight - If the forthcoming movie (Part 1 due Dec 2020), is a big success & here's hoping it is, then maybe they'll do a similar treatment to Frank Herbert's 5 sequel novels....& then, who knows, maybe even the prequel novels too - Highly Recommended !!!!

This review is about the physical product only. The book looked like in used condition, not new. As seen in the pics it arrived with some wear. Disappointed!

I did read this book 30 years ago and loved it. Re reading it now, it doesn't feel it aged and it still feel inspiring. It's well written not like books from other scifi authors of the same generation, which had a heavy nearly amateurish style.

Very pleased with this Deluxe edition. The teal/green on the edge of the pages, the amazing cover art and how when it opens up it has even more amazing artwork inside. Just speechless and very glad I made this purchase. A worthy addition to my DUNE collection of books and art.

I loved this book even before the movie came out (also amazing). What I love the most is the world-building - so detailed and well thought out, and just interesting to see how the characters survive in such a harsh environment, and how it shapes the story.

Many mediocre sequels followed, but this first is a great piece of political sci-fi. Imagine the oil-producers were extraterrestrial cultures, producing not lubricants and fuels but a natural psychotropic which facilitated hyperspace navigation. Now imagine an Asimovian empire trying to rest control of the source. Imagine that there is a fanatic desert uprising seeking to regain that control, resisted not by the Husseini nor the Ibn Saud but by a royal gang which looks for all the world like the Hapsburgs. Throw in a heroic noble family, political intrigue, brilliant, West-Wing level smartwriting, and just for, the helluvit, a tribe of real witches and some giant snakes which patrol the =deserts by tunneling under the sands. Completely addictive read. A modern classic..

You don't realise just how much is owed to this
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2019Verified Purchase
What is there to be said that already hasn't been said better by someone else? What a thouroughly enjoyable and interesting book this really is.
If I hadn't already been aware of the film and the documentary into the failure of the 70's film, I would of struggled to comprehend that this book is over half a century old.
But from that, if you are a fan of any epics, from sci-fi to fantasy, books and film, you'll never know just how many authors have been influenced by Frank Herbert.
On the surface it may seem a basic structured story, but keeping attention to what each character values and understands, you realise that as the book goes on, that every idea and thought carried are in fact wrong, that these characters all come to the realisation that their closely held truths are in fact falsehoods, as well as many characters having plans within plans, and plots within plots withing plots!
The pages just fly by once you get started and I was saddened when I realised the story was drawing to its conclusion.
A 5 star review from me, and I hope that this inspires someone else to dabble in the story of the people of Arrakis

Reviewed in Mexico on 13 February 2018Verified Purchase
Los títulos (aparte de Dune) que componen esta serie llamada Penguin Galaxy son: Stranger in a Strange Land, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Once and Future King, Neuromancer y 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Practically unreadable...but I want to like it

I’ve tried reading Dune three times, and three times I’ve had to give up.
I just can’t get on with it. It’s not the story, which is of course one of the greatest SF worlds ever created. I think it’s the overall assault of Herbert’s writing style that eventually wears me down-it just gets a bit too much by about 3/4 of the way through the novel.
One day I’ll manage to finish it once. I owe it that much.
