4.0 out of 5 starsGood, but not amazing
Reviewed in Australia on 28 July 2020
There is depth in here for sure, and having read the first book I am pushed to continuing on with the series, but not before taking a short break. I find this grand writing style a bit tedious at times and the works a little too arcane. I suppose the author tries to convey a sense of grandeur, and the weight of history through this style, but I find it all a bit confusing at times. It would have had more impact if explained more outright rather than having to dig for explanations in the appendix or online.

Still, a great novel (and excellent audio book), and I’m looking forward to seeing how the next 2 books of the original trilogy compare to this first one.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood, not great
Reviewed in Australia on 1 February 2020
I read this book as part of a bucket list. It has been highly recommended through lots of book lists I have seen. It didn't catch me though. While it wasn't a slog to get through I never felt like I wanted to get home and continue the story either. I could see how a sci fi fan would love the book though, if that is your genre. It was written over 50 years ago now so may be a bit dated.

It's a classic. Good to read again more than thirty years after my first time. The movie is great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The classic scifi read
Reviewed in Australia on 2 October 2017
As big books go this is a mammoth. I felt like I was learning a new language at the same time; having said that it is intriguing and well written. I did find myself thinking about the characters and the planet Dune when I wasn’t reading it which is a compliment to the author. I particularly enjoyed the ecology aspects and knew the author spent a year researching deserts and ecology before he began to write it. With my love of deserts I was intrigued by his descriptions of the different kinds of desert sands and the sounds they make which I believe comes from his first hand study of them. Excellent read if you like the bigger book and plenty of help with the appendices for explanations of words and the technicalities of the book. Pat McDonald British Crime Author

A fantastic reference, set in a complex and fascinating future universe. This novel refuses to age despite its increasing age. A must read for any enthusiast of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars That's not a kriss, this is a kriss...

Many mediocre sequels followed, but this first is a great piece of political sci-fi. Imagine the oil-producers were extraterrestrial cultures, producing not lubricants and fuels but a natural psychotropic which facilitated hyperspace navigation. Now imagine an Asimovian empire trying to rest control of the source. Imagine that there is a fanatic desert uprising seeking to regain that control, resisted not by the Husseini nor the Ibn Saud but by a royal gang which looks for all the world like the Hapsburgs. Throw in a heroic noble family, political intrigue, brilliant, West-Wing level smartwriting, and just for, the helluvit, a tribe of real witches and some giant snakes which patrol the =deserts by tunneling under the sands. Completely addictive read. A modern classic..
