4.0 out of 5 starsGood, but not amazing
Reviewed in Australia on 28 July 2020
There is depth in here for sure, and having read the first book I am pushed to continuing on with the series, but not before taking a short break. I find this grand writing style a bit tedious at times and the works a little too arcane. I suppose the author tries to convey a sense of grandeur, and the weight of history through this style, but I find it all a bit confusing at times. It would have had more impact if explained more outright rather than having to dig for explanations in the appendix or online.

Still, a great novel (and excellent audio book), and I’m looking forward to seeing how the next 2 books of the original trilogy compare to this first one.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood, not great
Reviewed in Australia on 1 February 2020
I read this book as part of a bucket list. It has been highly recommended through lots of book lists I have seen. It didn't catch me though. While it wasn't a slog to get through I never felt like I wanted to get home and continue the story either. I could see how a sci fi fan would love the book though, if that is your genre. It was written over 50 years ago now so may be a bit dated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ace 2019 Hardcover is Superb
Reviewed in Australia on 18 January 2020

This is a review of the excellent 2019 mass-market hardcover from Ace. Unfortunately it is glued not smyth-sewn, but I knew that before purchase after doing research, which took a long time comparing all extant hardcovers in print. It would be great if Amazon included binding details in the book profile. That said, the pages open nicely, so the perfect binding is not overly tight. I bought this edition for the beautiful design and in person it really is impressive. The illustrations and text typesetting are gorgeous, and the page margins are spot-on. By the way, I saw that the Folio Society DUNE has huge page margins...a turn-off for me.

Book Depository shipped the Ace DUNE to me without inside protection, but luckily it arrived undamaged. I am now looking forward to reading DUNE in 2020 for this first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars DUNE - Deluxe Edition

It's DUNE.....& that means it's awesome but this Deluxe version is nicely finished with lots of nice touches & it also has larger print. Actually the finish is a real highlight - If the forthcoming movie (Part 1 due Dec 2020), is a big success & here's hoping it is, then maybe they'll do a similar treatment to Frank Herbert's 5 sequel novels....& then, who knows, maybe even the prequel novels too - Highly Recommended !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing quality hardcover. A great addition to my DUNE collection

Very pleased with this Deluxe edition. The teal/green on the edge of the pages, the amazing cover art and how when it opens up it has even more amazing artwork inside. Just speechless and very glad I made this purchase. A worthy addition to my DUNE collection of books and art.

1.0 out of 5 stars Same old errors

Lovely hardback edition, but the text is the same error-riddled version. I think I might just type up my own copy, draw my own cover and have done with it. Don't waste your money on this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great edition let down by cover material
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2018

Review is of the Penguin Galaxy presentation only.
Shorter than a standard hardcover by about one and a half inches. Great smyth sewn binding. Just the right amount of flexibility. Easily kept open. Font is readable and pretty and a great size. Paper is acid free cream. Only down side is that the cover is made from very cheap cardboard and the text on the spine faces the opposite direction to all my other English language books; turn your head left to read it as it sits on the shelf. Shame really, without these two issues it would get 5 stars.
I recommend purchasing one of two other Dune hardcover editions: Folio Society or Barnes and Noble Leatherbound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quality of shipping
Reviewed in India on 27 October 2016

I ordered the Mass Market Paperback (Not the original edition) version of the book. The cover, quality of pages are substandard. Apart from being substandard, the book doesn't feel like it's first hand. The edges are crumpled, the spine has long wrinkles.

A piece of advice: Please stop shipping books in plastic packets. Use the card board binding to protect the contents.

It's very sad when you order a masterpiece and it reaches you battle-worn and scarred.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really beautiful edition
Reviewed in India on 13 March 2020

This deluxe edition is really beautiful with great artwork. If you are a fan of this work this is a great edition to have. But it has glued binding, not sewn binding would have been nice to have since this is a big book and expensive.
And also the beautiful dustcover was slightly damaged since the seller only put this in a cardboard sleeve and not a box which is a bit irresponsible of them considering the price of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars First book bigger in width and height than the other two books?
Reviewed in the United States on 4 September 2020

Great book so far, what can I say? It's a touchstone of science fiction. Ordered the first three books separately (because it was actually slightly cheaper to do that than get the box set) and kind of surprised the first book is larger in width and height than the other two. It's not a big deal I guess but kind of defeats the purpose of getting three books from a series that match each other. I just thought this was odd enough to mention in a review.

UPDATE: Figured it out, the first book is actually in Trade Paperback format; the other two are the NEW Mass Market Paperbacks. Unfortunately on Amazon, the latter is being sold without delineation as the "Paperback" option, often with the "Mass Market" option seeming to be OLDER editions of the MMP size. This is also true for the 6 book (unboxed) set that I later purchased twice, trying to get the rest of the books in the bigger size.

Note: I prefer the bigger size because it stays open when laid on a flat surface or in your lap. That sold it for me. On top of that, the font looks better somehow, and the narrow size just looked and felt kind of weird because the font size was the same but the pages are so narrow (I had an older edition of the first book that was MMP size but smaller font so it didn't look and read weird).

In all my frustrated searches on Amazon, it seemed really unusually difficult to find the rest of the books in the larger Trade Paperback size, so for your sake, here's what I figured out after way too much time: A) The official BOXED set is the Trade Paperback size of the first book. B) Or, if you are like me and only wanted to get the first few books in Trade Paperback size, go to the Penguin Random House website, find the individual Dune books, select "Paperback", and click on their Amazon link to buy it here (they also link to other major book dealers, if you prefer). I managed to find books two, three, and four this way., which were the only ones I really wanted anyway.

Note that as of writing this, the second and third books in Trade Paperback size on Amazon are both $9.99 each (same price as the NEW MMP books) but God Emperor is almost full price at $16.99 for some reason.
