I have a Black and Decker pole saw (with extension), because I moved to an acre with a lot of trees, but thought that the pruning was just going to be light-duty, and infrequent. I also had an investment in 20 and 40V B&D batteries and equipment, so it seemed like a logical way to go.
My experience with EGO equipment started with the purchase of a lawn mower kit (with battery and charger). Since then I've purchased a blower, a PH1400, an EP7500, and PSA1000. The cost of the batteries is prohibitive enough that I pretty much use my 5Ah battery for everything. This purchase may change that.
I won't get too much into the accessories because I've only used this with the PSA1000, and not the trimmer or edger. The accessories are pretty expensive considering the motor is in the PH1400.
Construction of the part is pretty typical of EGO products. Large, chunky plastic and a mix of extruded and cast aluminum. It feels like a well-built piece of equipment. The controls are intuitive and can easily be operated while wearing heavy gloves. The general-purpose nature of the PH1400+accessories results in a heavier solution than a purpose-specific tool. With a 5Ah battery I feel like it's a little head-light. That might be good for maneuverability, but I'd prefer a bit more weight at the accessory end to help with stability. A lighter battery, like the 2.0 or 2.5Ah, would probably help the balance a bit.
I wish that EGO has just made a dedicated pole saw. I don't feel the PH1400 platform was a great choice for this particular application. I suspect that the STA1500 and EA0800 are probably better suited for the PH1400. My EGO reviews tend to sound fairly similar... they're good products if the battery cost doesn't make you flinch. The PH1400 is no exception. Recommended.
If you want a battery-powered string trimer, the combination of a PH1400, an STA1500, and even a 2 Ah battery will set you back considerably more than highly rated alternatives. So is it worth it? The STA1500, like all EGO tools (aside from one older leaf blower I had) is fairly well made. I have a fairly comprehensive PH1400 review posted (along with EP7500/PSA1000 reviews), and I detail the main issue with this setup. Theoretically the motor being in the PH1400 makes the attachment cost lower, but it does come at a cost. The spline drive has quite a bit of mechanical inefficiency, and the driveshaft weighs quite a bit... and a lot more than wires carrying power down to a motor at the head. When equipped with the 5 Ah battery, the PH1400 + STA1500 combination is comparable in weight to my last two gasoline string trimmers. Opt for a lighter battery if you care about the weight. It's a nitpick, but I HATE that the indexing mark for the keyed joint for the PH1400 and STA1500 is a STICKER! Paint would be fine, a raised or embossed marking would be even better - a sticker, on the other hand, sucks. This is a LAWN TOOL that will exposed to moisture, brush, handling, etc., plus it costs enough that you should expect to use it for years... will the sticker still be there?
Trimming performance is good, even in dense vegetation. The cutoff blade on the guard is a little too short, in my opinion - I've had to re-spin the trimmer a few times when the line had over-advanced. Speaking of that, the STA1500 makes it really easy to rewind your line... however, if you have a lot of ground to cover, it's usually faster to cut off the excess with the guard blade. I trimmed my property (about an acre) and used about a quarter of a 5 Ah charge. I don't love the line spool, but at least you don't need proprietary trimming line spools. The advance is about average for trimmers, but isn't among the best of breed.
Special note: A byproduct of the driveshaft concept employed by the PH1400 means that you can use an EP7500 with the STA1500. Granted, the use cases for this combination are pretty narrow, but I did use it successfully in trimming vines coming off of a 12 foot trellis. Aside from the additional weight and changed balance, it works well (if a bit unwieldy).
The STA1500 + PH1400 is a decent trimmer. As a multi-use tool, it's not as good (in some ways) as a purpose-built trimmer. However, if you already have a PH1400 and battery, this is a good selection. Conditionally recommended.
The trimmer attachment is well-made with a very positive feed for the trimmer line. The quick disconnect is similar to, but NOT identical to the system used for the older Ryobi system. This isn’t a complaint, I’m just letting people know that the two systems are not compatible and don’t buy this thinking it’ll work.
Overall, I’m impressed and very pleased with the product.
You have to buy the attachments, battery, and charger separately. I already had a battery and charger, so I didn't have to buy anything. I bought this so I could get the Pole Saw attachment.
This with the Pole Saw attachment is GREAT! You will not find an easier way to trim those out-of-reach branches. I also bought the extension to give me even more reach.
If you look at the other EGO Power+ attachments, you will see why you need this Power Head.
I have many of the EGO products, including battery powered mower, Carbon grass trimmer, etc. All of them are great quality.
Also, I don't work for EGO, I don't get paid by EGO, and I purchased all of my EGO products (no free ones for me).
Well. . . because I didn't know the difference between "Rapid Reload" and "Power Reload"
"Power Reload" is the one you see advertised on TV all the time where you take a pre-cut length of trimmer string, feed it though the spool, then press a button to wind the string onto the spool.
"Rapid Reload" - that the STA1500 has - is similar, but you have to manually wind the string instead of simply pushing a button.
I feel I've been the victim of some marketing trickery, but to be fair, there was one Answer in the Questions section that touched on this, but I missed it prior to placing my order.
I'm just posting this information so maybe others won't make the same mistake, but if you're like me - already own the PH1400 PowerHead - then you really don't have much choice.
I'll post an update after I actually get a chance to try the unit out.
I'm only giving it four stars because I'm left-handed and lead with the trimmer to the left side. The line guard/shield is rotated about 15 degrees off center instead of dead on with the shaft. That little bit of angle is enough to allow debris to fly back up into my face. Never had a trimmer do that before. So now I trim right-handed. Not a big deal but awkward for me. Always wear your safety glasses when trimming.
