Thought provoking, " mature" , written in a perspective language sometimes yet beautifully done.

Definitely recommended for a lot of "soul" searching.

The title should give the hint. This is hard work and at times contradictory which makes it hard to keep engaged. Ended up choosing some of the essays of interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great advice – but ends up being quite superficial with 4-page long chapters on average.

I'm not sure whether this book was a mistake, or one of the best books I've read. On the one hand, it does not have a main idea or contention that's backed up by several chapters of detailed discussion, and instead feels like a collection of short blog-posts regurgitating basic self-help advice (that I've mostly heard of) – which, in my opinion, does not constitute a proper book. However, I feel as though the author is nudging my life towards a positive direction each time I turn its pages, and that I tend to be happier and more mindful on the days where I read this book.

I suppose I've just listed the (perhaps obvious) pros and cons of a book titled with "101 Essays..." My main doubt is that this book, like many ordinary self-help books, have given me doses of spiritual highs without leaving considerable lasting impacts on my life. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Just after finishing though, my impression is that this book packs a large quantity of self-help advice, but perhaps wasn't enough overall for me to justify its price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trivial and Plain

By essays, they are actually list of points with very little in-depth thinking. And the book is composed of 101 such lists, mostly rephrasing and repeating the trivial.

Nothing revolutionary or will open your mind. It may make you feel like you have some clarity while you are reading it but I doubt it will "change the way you think".

Extremely disappointed on how a book full of lists and more lists is called a book of essays. I am just finding it so hard to continue. The quality of paper is bad. Unless you are new to the world of self development, this book is really very very basic.

If you're stuck in a rut, if you're confused, perhaps frustrated with how you're life is heading, then it could all come down to how you think. The well-written essays in this excellent read provides guidance on this and other little gems. Wel worth the purchase!

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of recycled shopping list styled paper cut-outs
Reviewed in Australia on 9 August 2021
The title is a misnomer. There are some essays but the majority are numbered list of short statements, the sort found on cheap magazines that were then cut out, recycled and put together in a scrap book in no particular order. You will find ten things successful people do, twenty things intelligent people don't and then seventy of some other things.

The author has some talent in her way with words, but with this kind of writings she is not going to win any literary awards. The fact that this book is so popular and gained such reputation is actually quite sad.

There are a few bright ideas that sadly are presented as bare statements, no beginning, no end, very little to support and arranged with little structure or logic.

The narrator has a nice voice but the shopping-list style of the book really ruins the flow. It does not work as a podcast that one can listen to when going for a walk. When you write a list of ideas, the number makes sense and readers don't really pay attention on the number. But when you read the lists out loud, the numbers are just distraction from the ideas presented. The publisher can glamorize this book as 'thoughts catalog' all they can but it is really just a messy pile of paper cut-outs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don’t waste your time
Reviewed in Australia on 9 March 2022
Absolute terrible book. Feels like the author simply found a collection of online blogs/articles of the usual “top 10 things to improve your life”/other topics and combined it into one book. Majority of the messages were surface level points and very few actual studies referenced to back up the message.

One point was legit “call you mum, not everyone has the privilege”…..with no further explanation. I was thinking “well duh, do I really need a book to tell me this”. I was half expecting the next point to be “call your grandma”.

Definitely better when a self help book focuses on a few key points but in depth as opposed to this rubbish collection of “101 essays”.
