5.0 out of 5 starsThought provoking essays
Reviewed in Australia on 30 June 2019
Thought provoking, " mature" , written in a perspective language sometimes yet beautifully done.

Definitely recommended for a lot of "soul" searching.

The title should give the hint. This is hard work and at times contradictory which makes it hard to keep engaged. Ended up choosing some of the essays of interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great advice – but ends up being quite superficial with 4-page long chapters on average.
Reviewed in Australia on 2 December 2021

I'm not sure whether this book was a mistake, or one of the best books I've read. On the one hand, it does not have a main idea or contention that's backed up by several chapters of detailed discussion, and instead feels like a collection of short blog-posts regurgitating basic self-help advice (that I've mostly heard of) – which, in my opinion, does not constitute a proper book. However, I feel as though the author is nudging my life towards a positive direction each time I turn its pages, and that I tend to be happier and more mindful on the days where I read this book.

I suppose I've just listed the (perhaps obvious) pros and cons of a book titled with "101 Essays..." My main doubt is that this book, like many ordinary self-help books, have given me doses of spiritual highs without leaving considerable lasting impacts on my life. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Just after finishing though, my impression is that this book packs a large quantity of self-help advice, but perhaps wasn't enough overall for me to justify its price.

This book is amazing and fun... it really does change the way you think and there are so many little lessons on perspective that make you a better person for doing so.

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of recycled shopping list styled paper cut-outs
Reviewed in Australia on 9 August 2021
The title is a misnomer. There are some essays but the majority are numbered list of short statements, the sort found on cheap magazines that were then cut out, recycled and put together in a scrap book in no particular order. You will find ten things successful people do, twenty things intelligent people don't and then seventy of some other things.

The author has some talent in her way with words, but with this kind of writings she is not going to win any literary awards. The fact that this book is so popular and gained such reputation is actually quite sad.

There are a few bright ideas that sadly are presented as bare statements, no beginning, no end, very little to support and arranged with little structure or logic.

The narrator has a nice voice but the shopping-list style of the book really ruins the flow. It does not work as a podcast that one can listen to when going for a walk. When you write a list of ideas, the number makes sense and readers don't really pay attention on the number. But when you read the lists out loud, the numbers are just distraction from the ideas presented. The publisher can glamorize this book as 'thoughts catalog' all they can but it is really just a messy pile of paper cut-outs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Superficial

I bought the book because the title seemed compelling. The title is a complete exaggeration because the rather short chapters are mostly lists of commonplace statements and lack quality and depth to qualify as essays. The high ranking the book receives and the reason why it became a bestseller is probably because there is nothing controversial in it. It wants to make you feel better about your life, jumping randomly between topics, but there is nothing thought provoking or to learn from. Save the money and go to the movies instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insights into positive thinking

It does what it says on the tin, or in this case, in the title. How to recognise when my thought patterns are a dead end and how, and why, to think positively.
Often I recall the feelings from a part of the book but not the detail explanation or insight that led to the feelings. It would be lovely to have a keyword index to help me find and reinforce poorly remembered passages. The table of contents is simply insufficient for this purpose. Otherwise a 5 star review.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful
Reviewed in Germany on 21 April 2022

I was compelled by the title but unfortunately, it did not what it promised. It does not contain a single original thought, everything is very superficial. Some of the "thoughts" in this book are just plain ridiculous, e.g. "what you hate the most in others is what you hate the most about yourself". Just no. None of the "theories" are backed up by any kind of scientific evidence, it feels like the author just wrote down the first things that came to her mind and turned it into a book. It sometimes also seemed like the author is just projecting her own insecurities onto the readers, considering that she mentions weight all the time. What I also found rather weird is when she says "you're only in you're 20s, you have all the time in the world" (there is a whole chapter on that!). Why is she assuming that every reader is in their 20s? I feel like the author just published her personal diary.
I forced myself to read half of it, but then couldn't take it anymore. Save your money, there are tons of other books that you can read instead that ACTUALLY make you think.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty book… and that’s about it
Reviewed in Germany on 26 February 2022

The book is aesthetically pleasing and looks great on a coffee table, but the „essays“ are superficial and lack true insight. It’s described as „philosophical writing“, but it’s just a bunch of repetitive advice you’ll get from your parents for free. Summed up all 101 „essays“ (which are sometimes only lists) tell you that your thinking changes your life, to be grateful for what you have and to see chances in problems. The writing itself isn’t that great either - it’s very simply written and plain. It’s not a bad book, but the title really raises expectations to a level it cannot compete at. As I said, nice for a coffee table, but nothing moving.

Trying my best to make it through the whole book bit it’s tough. Instead of ‘essays’ the title should be ‘lists’….quite disappointing. I think I’d pass on this one next time!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true promise

Crucial book in a period of my life where metanoia was unavoidable and necessary. This book is a compilation of unabashed truths, realizations and tools for the most relevant transformation.
The book does what it promises in the title, if you are willing to do the work, and if you fall in love with the work of becoming all you can be. Ready to embrace yourself?
