If you'd like a gentle, easy to understand introduction to violin this is the book.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2021Verified Purchase
I have to admit I bought myself this book, a violin, all the accessories and sat down with some youtube videos once or twice instead, for some silly reason, then never bothered to pick it up again for weeks. Tuning is a faff, finding the time is hard (you get the gist). This weekend I have finally had the "aha" moment and it's because I turned to this book and got hooked. I can already play 8 notes (using two strings) pretty confidently, which to me is huge progress, and am on exercise 60 something in the book. That is probably because unlike an excellent student I do like to plough through at a silly speed, but you know what - that's better than not playing the instrument in my eyes. The book teaches you how to hold your bow and violin, how to read music note by note, how to learn to bow up or down, how to leave a pause when needed, how to read a quaver or semi quaver (handy if you're new to all this). But it also gets into teaching you different notes quickly, which I really like about it. Slightly bizarrely the CD covers up to track 71 or 72 whereas there are 195 tracks in the book, I have emailed the publisher to work out how I can access the other tracks as they can help you understand what you are aiming for (but aren't totally essential). It may be that if you buy a new copy, unlike myself, you get all the tracks on CDs but in my case atleast only 1 arrived and a previous owner has annotated in the book that you need to download after that point so I am guessing it just doesn't come with the other tracks on CDs. I learned violin for 3 or so years from 7-10 or 11, and am now 28. I wasn't very good as a child and am certainly learning pretty much from 0. Even holding the instrument is a totally new feeling to me. I have however read music before but I think this book would have been a very good start even if I hadn't.

This is a great book for kids who are beginners. It is really well written and my daughter is finding it really helpful with her violin. She likes that it tell you how to do thing like a biw hold and also has picutres that show you. Would defently recommend.

Beginner Violinist Who Is Most Impressed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2016Verified Purchase
I have just started playing the violin. I am self-taught, but in the 3 weeks since I began, with this book, I feel like I have made sure but steady progress. My family thinks so too as they no longer feel the need to leave the house when I start playing. A superb book that lays a solid foundation and I would recommend to others.

wish I'd found book one last year cos this year I'd be well ahead of myself.

i wore my headphones and played along with all the excercises. I've beem taking private lessons for two years. O my, I've got a great deal of work to do but it is abfab playing along and learning where i've been going wrong so I can practise out my bad habits. This is great and my teacher is amazed at my sudden progress. Try and record yourself and enjoy hearing your own mistakes/progress. Above all have FUN with this.

A nice place to start

A nice place to start. Finally got to grips with at least how to begin reading sheet music. I need to focus a bit more but that isn't the books fault. Good songs, certainly feel a sense of accomplishment when you get them right. Could only be better if it came with a free metronome.
