From the Editor

Ten years ago, their son went missing and was never found. Now the unthinkable has happened again with their daughter. In the real world, when I see heart-wrenching stories of parents’ losing their child, I can’t imagine the unending pain they’re going through. But in the world that author Martyn Ford has created, the Clarke family isn’t viewed with complete sympathy. Young Ethan vanished without a trace, and the world watched, unable to believe the family’s bad luck. Now, ten years on, it has happened again—their daughter has disappeared, and it’s hard to believe the Clarkes are innocent.

As I read, I wondered what I would do in their place. Knowing nobody would listen, that the police would see them as the culprits while the person behind their tragedy walked free. When Ethan vanished, Detective Sam Maguire fought harder than anyone else to find him, and failed. Now Sam comes out of retirement to take on their case again, but every time he pulls a thread, he unravels a new web of deceit and mystery. Who are the Clarkes, really?

Martyn Ford’s writing is as breathtaking as the story is harrowing, and as I raced toward the blistering conclusion, I still couldn’t decipher the truth behind these disappearances. Like Detective Maguire, I began to wonder whom to believe, when all the evidence shows that the Clarkes are guilty—and, if I had lost my child, how hurt I would feel knowing the world was against me. The exceptional quality of Ford’s voice drew me in so completely that the masterful twist hoodwinked me, and at once I realized how little you truly see when you’re looking in the wrong place.
