I cried over this book.
It's funny, so well written. The narrator's acerbic voice and detachment betray a vulnerability.
I felt this book captures something so important to all of his - loving and being loved and how relationships are so complex.
I was drawn in by the anecdotes about teaching English by a 20-something Irish girl. But I felt heartbreak at the ménage-à-trois. Also hope.
I really feel for the main character. Her faults and struggles are endearing, though she hides them from others with her sharp way of speaking so well.
It's a lovely read. I recommend it to anyone.

Ava, newly arrived in Hong Kong from Dublin, spends her days teaching English to rich children.
Julian is a banker. A banker who likes to spend money on Ava, to have sex and discuss fluctuating currencies with her. But when she asks whether he loves her, he cannot say more than 'I like you a great deal'.
Enter Edith, a lawyer. Refreshingly enthusiastic and unapologetically earnest, Edith takes Ava to the theatre when Julian leaves Hong Kong for work. Quickly, she becomes something Ava looks forward to.
And then Julian writes to tell Ava he is coming back to Hong Kong....

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

e.g. Judy Garland died in 1969 aged 47 so finding a picture of her ‘her fifties’ is unlikely. Little things like this undermine the book which has a base in Ava’s sly intelligence.

Do not read this book. I get the whole point of this book but it was so pointless (unless you like a novel whereas it’s more of an everyday lifestyle with normal, regular citizens then read this book) and boring. I wish i didn’t watch that youtuber that literally praised this book and gave it a high rating. I am so mad that i got so excited for this book only for it to end up as a waste of my precious time.

Not worth finishing

I rarely give up on a book but the characters were so unappealing and the"plot" so unengaging that I only read about a third of this.

Starts off great but..

Starts off great but very quickly loses all the humour, sharp wit and relativeness that made the first part so appealing. The rest is merely repetitive meanderings on the same topics over and over again with no satisfaction of a worthwhile conclusion.

10/10: would read again

There’s something deceptively simple about this prose. It makes you feel as if you are reading a quick and simple novel, when in reality the characters are seeping under your skin and you are deeply invested in the ideas.

I didn't get it

If you're looking for an easy read to fill your time then this may be worth a go. There's not a huge amount of plot (and the ending in particular didn't make much sense to me) - the book's focus is on the narrator's thoughts and feelings about herself and her romantic relationships with the two other main characters, Julian and Edith. Ava is a woman in her twenties and I would say that is the target audience.
Personally, it was hard not to feel like I was reading something that was trying to be very Sally Rooney but some people may like that about it!

Overhyped - but a quick, relaxing summer read nonetheless

This book was not as special as the newspapers said it would be, and the title itself read "Exciting Times". It is barely exciting. The concept is original but the execution is basic, cliche and simply overdone. I have read elsewhere that Crazy Rich Asian fans might like it - this could not be further from the truth. This book lacks the adrenaline and actual excitement that trilogy contains. This is a bleak, easy read that one should not expect too much from. I read it very quickly and the ending was a further disappointment. The cliffhanger was pointless, as the book was not even 300 pages and yet the writer still could not finish up the ending properly by giving us an extra 5 pages of an epilogue or explaining who she ends up with. Maybe, I will reread it again in a year or two and will grow to love it. But for now, it is lacking that literary and artistic kick which makes a book ever so memorable. And until I can find or understand the flavour of the book, it is an OKAY book. Not good, or great, or amazing. Simply grey and okay.
