EDIT - Pen lasted one and a half years then the plastic finger-grip broke so can't now use it! A lot of money for only one and a half year's use and not even heavy use! Would NOT recommend!
Firstly, good points.
The nib is a silky smooth writer, and I think shares with a few of the pricier models.
Very comfortable to hold.
Given this, why on earth the 3 stars? Well.. this pen is quite a crazy shape. It has a quite ridiculously large grip section that is (as another reviewer had alluded to) extremely easy to stain with ink. Yes it is soft, yes it is comfy... and yes it looks like it was designed with a 4 year old in mind. Some people might like the look and feel, but I am willing to bet no-one will like the ease in which it stains. This leads me to a second bad point, which is infinitely worse given the staining issue : it leaks. This is kind of unforgivable. To elaborate, this pen is part of a large collection and this particular one has never left my large pen display case. I can give any pen the benefit of the doubt if I use it on the go in a top pocket, these things happen. To leak outrageously when it has been stored in a mainly static protected case - no thank you. Of course once it leaked nib end, it saturated the grip and now is visually ruined. It is just a mess.
I gave it 3 stars for it's nice smooth writing abilities and great flow - but after a few weeks it was basically ruined so there is clearly a design fault somewhere.
You have been warned.
I usually write with a Lamy Vista, but this pen is in a different league. Although from the BASIC range, the quality of the nib is amazing. This medium nib writes finer than the Lamy Vista fine nib. It feels great to hold and write with excellent ink flow. The only thing I 'll need to get used to is that this pen has a bit of weight to it, more at the rear end, due to its metal construction.
Body: the carbon fibre pattern looks stunning, probably the best looking one in the BASIC range.
Cap: the main reason some people don't like the Basic range. It is hefty and frankly speaking, ugly, compared to the rest of the pen. It's made of very light plastic and pops when you pull open, sometimes smudges a bit of ink onto the grip. Really wish the cap was better designed.
I was concerned about the feeling of the nib section, but their choice of rubber is ideal, you get a nice grip without too much friction.
I am using it with the ink converter and have no complaints.
The only thing that sort of lets it down, although not really, is that if you put the cap on the pen as you write, it's enormous. The cap, however, is a lovely tactile material so it's pleasant to hold.
