Wrong. Sadly, the truth is disappointing: This is the biggest steaming pile I've seen in a lonnnng time.
The story made no sense at all. It's like it was written by a bad script algorithm. From scene to scene it's like playing Clue or pulling random story elements and characters from a hat and the director says, "This is what we shoot today." Pity the poor editor who had to paste the cowpies together afterwards. It's bad, so indescribably bad throughout, but I'll cite just one example. SPOILER ALERT. Well, it sounds like there are spoilers here, but trust me it's impossible to have a spoiler for this kind of phlegm: For undetermined reason The Rock decides he's going to fight an army of heavily armed highly-trained high-tech bad guys. In Samoa. At his door-wide Mama's house. That he hasn't seen for a quarter century. A poor man's Skyfall? Who knows what they were smoking. But local pride swells into an opposing army of islanders who back him up. With traditional island dress and stick weapons. Yes, our Rock steps out onto the beach ready for mortal combat dressed in nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist. After much Polynesian chanting, dancing and stick melee the tide of battle turns, and the bad guy beats a hasty retreat. In a tow truck. The Rock has got to get this guy, catch this guy, destroy this guy, save the day. But that's a bit much since, you know, he's only wearing a towel. Never mind, the director's figured out how to save this one. He cuts to The Rock running the 40 yard dash as he--voila!--rips the towel from around his waist, letting it fly in the wind. Women in the audience gasp in anticipation of the man that is The Rock, but...awww... in an instant he's grown a pair of pants! Tony Stark should have it so good. But he's still shirtless. And shoeless. Just wearing pants chasing down that damned tow truck. But never fear! By the time The Rock catches up with the speeding tow truck on foot and vaults onto the back, he's now grown a shirt and a pair of shoes. . . . Geez.
Okay, I get the homage to The Rock's Samoan heritage and all. It was meant to celebrate that, and that's cool. But...it was done in such a schlocky way that I daresay it didn't inspire respect for the island culture with any of the audience not one bit. The cherry on top of that?: The Rock rides off into the sunset slobbering over the girl--an anorexic British blonde.
Maybe it's not too late to warn Goodwill to take it off their shelves. . . .
The tone and feel of the movie is a bit like the Fast & Furious movies, with over-the-top stunts, fights, and chase sequences. The acting is a bit better than what has been in the other movies, but it is never going to win an Oscar. The cinematography is wonderful, especially at the end when they are on Samoa. And, there are a couple of hilarious cameos by Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart.
For those who get the 4k blu-ray, the movie looks and sounds great in the UHD format. There are well over an hour's worth of bonus material including an alternate opening and deleted scenes. And, the bonus material is included on the UHD disc, not just on the regular blu ray that is also included in the set.
Overall, this is a movie that you know what you will get. It is action-heavy, with a blend of humor and a bit of drama. It, like the other F&F movies, is a bit tongue-in-cheek and does not take itself too seriously, aside from the family vibe that the other movies have. If you like the other movies, while I cannot guarantee you will like this one given that none of the other characters show up or are even hinted at in this one, chances are good you will find this one enjoyable even if you do not love it. It is definitely worth a couple hours if you are in the mood for an action movie.
My son is 13 and he was completely frustrated about this movie, is not bad at all, but some scenes (like three or four), make my brain explote. Let me explain, instead of Hobbs I thought I was looking Captain America from Marvel superhero franchise. I will not spoiler, I can tolerate the "out of real" scenes in FF movies, the superstrength because of the super muscles, but here is just out of any logic and sense, and one after another. Thanks that Hobbs is human and can't fly, oh wait, yes he flies in the movie and is stronger than a war helicopter. Also the final part in the island, terrible, just bad publicity to nativs, why not in the streets of LA?
It is a really shame and pity, I bought this thinking it would be the action film of the year, and turns into the worst action film of my life, this is not marvel or dc. Hey with the same money they could make a wonderful movie.
This film (an obvious attempt to spin off a series of related films) carries on the tradition of family and loyalty as the protagonists' core guiding principles. The storyline was pretty basic and formulaic of action films. The chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was very good....some pretty fun witty banter/bravado being thrown back and forth. Idris Elba makes for an excellent villain and fun supporting roles by Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds! Round it out with stunning international scenery, good special effects and an energectic soundtrack. [3.5/5]
There were some surprise actors in the movie. And beautiful scenery. I don't watch these action movies for their realism. I want the escapism offered by the incredible chases, the villains being such unrepentant monsters, as well as the vanquishing of many bad guys.
If you like these guys, laughter, and unrelenting action you should enjoy this movie as much as my Mom and I did.
