Tim Barlow
5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little device with a great price

Purchased this to replace an older Apple TV and it is a perfect device. Allows all the usual suspects to be added for streaming and the picture quality is great (older tv so not having 4k is no issue). Setup quick and easy and the unit has no lag, everything works great out of the box. The remote is responsive and having Alexa built in makes navigation easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice update to the Fire Tv basic

Fantastic update to the Fire TV basic (previous-gen)..

I bought this as a replacement for my sister's old Apple TV that was complaining that it couldn't do anything anymore.. YouTube killed it off and some of the other apps had as well (as well as newer services not even being available on it).

This one has everything (including the 9now app which won't run on the old basic because it's running the newer version of Android.. it also allows the stick to have Binge sideloaded on it where the old can't (again because newer version of Android).. only downside to sideloading Binge is that the icon is greyed out/broken looking.. which is fine if you only sideload one app.. I imagine having multiple apps like this would be frustrating tho.

Easy to setup and easy to use - not super sold on the new UI, but it's nice that it lets me sign into my Sister's profile on my Amazon account at the stick level rather than just the prime video app level.

Very happy.. I see now that they have released the 'with tv controls' and '4k' versions.. I would get the tv controls version today now if I could.. though it would be interesting to see if it would work with all tv's.. (my Chromecast with Google TV doesn't control the volume on my old tv despite it being infrafred rather than bluetooth/HDMI-CEC control.. so I don't know what that's about).

4.0 out of 5 stars This new version of the product is far better

The product is very easy to install and setup, because I have and Amazon account already. The product has all the apps I use, except for one called DocPlay, I am in Australia so this app is only available in Australia, so I cannot fault Amazon for that. Performance over WIFI seems to be reasonable and does not buffer and stutter like some Android devices do. I was unsure about it have only WIFI, however Amazon does sell a cable adaptor that powers the device and gives an Ethernet connection. I have been using the Amazon Fire TV Stick Light for three weeks now and has not had issues. The reason I bought this device is because my more expensive Android TV device could not send surround sound 5.1 to my speaker system without costing me more money, and days of testing with expensive audio cables and audio converters. This device was cheaper to buy and does the job, I have found using the remote to be easy to get use to, and for my friend who does not find technology easy to use. The device made me laugh as I first tried the ALEXA voice control, I whispered a command and ALEXA whispered back to me. A little creepy, I find it funny. Hashtag Good times with ALEXA. The Fire Stick Light seems to be small sleek and definitely a smartypants device. Big Thumbs Up!!

Recently ordered two units: one for the living room, and one for kids bedroom. Product arrived on time. Comes with Australian wall adapter. Setup is easy, and combined with Echo dot, makes it even easier to use. You can easily setup parental control. Resolution is also very good. Must have if you've got Amazon Prime subscription, but your smart TV does not support Amazon Prime app.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, super voice remote

Liked the ease of using this once setup. On my TV, returns a blank dark screen until I hit the Home button - this one needs fixing I think. Voice recognition is great. For Australian buyers, Kayo Sports is not part of the app set. You get Apple TV+, Prime TV, Netflix, YouTube, Curiosity Stream, SBS, etc. and Optus Sports amongst the popular ones. Great product overall. I wish there was Kayo Sports and the capability to cast my phone (in an easy manner) alongside the app set.

This is super easy to set up and allows me to use the Disney Plus app on my old hisense tv. So happy with it that I bought a second one for a non smart tv and now can access Netflix / Prime and Disney Plus.

Very simple plug it in (small extension included for tight spaces) and setup starts. The trickiest bit was remembering passwords for the various services.

Quite easy to set up, the thing that took the longest was setting up the accounts for the apps on it, but once it’s been set up it’s plug and play!
It’s being used on two different non smart tvs in the house depending on what room we want to be in and it’s so easy to pull it out of one tv and put it in another and it just works straight away, very convenient.
Highly recommended

Great product. Have a Chromecast but found it a problem to use, sometimes it would work other times not. This Fire TV works fantastic. My older Smart TV now is truely smart. Able to watch Netflix with no buffering issues either. Thanks Amazon. And by the way did I mention the super fast delivery? Delivered on as Saturday, beat that Aust Post!

The Fire TV stick was extremely easy to setup, the easiest device I have ever installed and configured, adding items to the menu was simple, navigation is a dream. PIcture quality is excellent. Using Alexa to navigate works well also. The price for the Fire TV stick was great and excellent value for the money. I highly recommend this device.
