5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the money. I think you can expand the storage with an OTG cable

Pleased with the device, amazed at Amazon selling it preconfigured for you, very cool. As always we don't get the better American models here, no volume control which sucks or 4k. You can buy the better one for $70 delivered on ebay. But as it is not released here not going to waste my time getting one, bit over stuffing around with beating geoblocking with smart dns etc.

I put it on an older smart tv, and it really breaths some life in to it. Was pretty surprised to fill up the storage so fast, in half an hour. Was pleased to find a solution. A $6 otg cable and a usb stick should work to fix that. So putting 128gb on it today.

Hooked it up to a playstation 4 controller. Maybe a bit of overkill but was really impressed how easy it is to do.

Pretty pleased with it. Was previously a Roku household. Still think they are very good but we are in Australia not America, keeping things simple.

Easy to expand the storage will take up to 2 terrabytes if you see the need.

Have noticed the Fire Tv light crashes a lot, turns on and off. Never had these issues on my Roku devices.

Found out what the issue was. The flexible Hdmi adapter extender plug seemed to be causing problems so I plugged the stick direct in to the tv. Works fine haven't been able to crash it with heap of background apps running

That is the only issue with the device. There is no way to close the background apps easily. You have to root around in the menus and do them one by one. Total pain in the arse

Really recommend getting that OTG cable, makes it a pretty decent device with all that storage. If you purchase movies, which I don't. You will need storage space

Just a bit of an update. Fire Tv was a bit far away from the router to get 5G . I connected it to ethernet and still has the 128g storage. Actually just connected a usb hub to the otg cable and ran the storage and ethernet adapter of that. There is a good hub for sale on Amazon with ethernet built in for this purpose. Getting very stable good speeds now..

5.0 out of 5 stars Love my Fire TV Stick Lite
Reviewed in Australia on 5 January 2021

Loving my Fire TV Stick Lite so much I bought a second one for family while they were still on sale. I have a digital HD TV but found it getting slower & more glitchy over time. It also had a limited range of apps.
Very happy with my Fire TV Stick Lite as:
it plays Youtube, Vimeo & most streaming apps [not HBO Max yet but can watch via the browser],
the voice control function on remote is great,
you can not just play your Audible audio books but also Alexa can read regular kindle books aloud text to speech function enabled [which it is on most books];
you can use regular internet via browser;
Use voice control & search search within apps.
One my favourite functions though is how it brings up a list of movies & TV shows that you can rent or buy. HOWEVER it will tell you if you can watch show via a streaming app Prime Video/Netflix/Disney +/Tubi providing a link show within the relevant app. IE. you're not paying for a show you can otherwise watch for free ;) This function's only available when you search for show using Fire TV Stick Lite not from within different streaming apps.
I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite buy of 2020!!!
Reviewed in Australia on 15 November 2020

I knew is was going to be something special simply by the way in which it was packaged and I was not disappointed!

It was literally a 10 minute set up (if that). Insert the batteries info the remote, plug the fire stick into any available HDMI port, plug in the power plug and follow the onscreen instructions!

That it! Your in and away you go after a few device software updates...

Man I'm love with it!!!

The Amazon content is amazing, including prime tv and music!

I've got my audio connected to my hi fi system and both the picture and sound are flawless...

My son was so impressed he's now ordered one too.

The package it comes bundled with is also worth noting I E. Fox Sport, YouTube, free to air tv etc...
My only complaint....

If only i knew this existed months ago I would have saved heaps of cash on Foxtel subscriptions that I didn't need...

One of if not my best buy of 2020....

1.0 out of 5 stars Playing back Anazon Photos on TV

I also have an Echo Show 5 and 8 and Alexa works fine with it if you can ask Alexa to play the various folders that you know the name of or simply ask Play my Photos or Play my recent Photos & the Show has no problems with it. I wanted the feature to play back my Amazon Photos on my TV so I bought the Fire stick

However Alexa on the Fire Stick can hardly locate any photo folder

When I set it up, it gave the option of a Mosaic display & not knowing what it was I selected Mosaic & all the photos displayed in lots of 15photos and I could not get back to a single photo slide show - I phoned Help and after about 20min of trying the Person said he will do some research & come back to me with half an hour. I never heard from him & eventually sorted out the problem by restoring to Factory Settings - A total waste of time overall

5.0 out of 5 stars A big upgrade to my 1st/2nd gen chromecasts for 1080p video.
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020

I've always had a lot of issues with streaming sticks, and even more issues with smart tvs. Especially getting them to play more difficult codecs from my plex server, or handle scrobbling at a decent pace. The early cheaper/mid-range fire tv sicks have a bad rep, but they seemed to have ironed out the kinks here. Its performant, no screen-tearing or long buffering after ff/reverse. The android app access/selection is excellent. The remote is excellent in range, quality and speed and the voice search is good - although its integration is terrible. It doesn't seem to work inside 95% of apps, even to just enter a search term. Overall, the software UX definately pushes you towards the amazon streaming services, which I very rarely use (i have amazon prime, but mostly I use spotify/twitch/youtube/plex). Its not difficult to install and launch apps, but it defintely seems like an afterthough compared to how google's android/google TV UX works, where apps are first class citizens.

That being said, the apps themselves run great (and you have access the just about everything you could want) due to it being and android TV based software, its just the homescreen and voice search which could incorporate them better. The cast functionality from your phone seems to be available everywhere (although this is more on app developers to implement I believe) and performs way better than my 1st/2nd gen chromecasts (similarly priced at the time), with no disconnections between the phone and the fire stick and fast response to your phone.

The other main drawback other than pushing amazon services is the lack of 4k support. It seems to do a decent job of handling odd encoding like 10bit as well as subtitle formats from my plex server, but its 1080p only. I still don't own a 4k tv (in 2020, outrageous) and I mostly watch Anime where you only get 1080p max, but in the interests of futureproofing and for the odd hollywood movie I watch, if I upgrade my other TVs chromecast, I'm going to get a 4k capable stick. Unfortunately, Amazon don't sell their 4k stick in Australia, so I'm going to probably look at the new Chromecast with Google TV unless Amazon start selling theirs here soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fire stick is screwing up my tvs

I at first thought this was fantastic but have after a few months I countered a serious problem. I brought it with me to my brother's place and plugged it into his tv.... Which was working fine before, we were playing on the PS4 , watching DVDs etc no prob. Then after we plugged in the firestick there was no sound... Restarted the stick and tv tried a different HDMI port etc finally it had sound... But even with the stick removed the tv still plays up. It now registers the HDMI cables plugged in as DVI... Figured it was the tv. Its not ancient but it's about 6 years old now so annoyed but thought it was just getting old..... It just happened to a second tv I just plugged it into. I don't know what it physically is doing to the TV's or if it downloads or installs software on the tv but this has never happened on any tv IV had before now it's happened on two in a matter of weeks... Can't be a coincidence

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice update to the Fire Tv basic
Reviewed in Australia on 31 March 2021

Fantastic update to the Fire TV basic (previous-gen)..

I bought this as a replacement for my sister's old Apple TV that was complaining that it couldn't do anything anymore.. YouTube killed it off and some of the other apps had as well (as well as newer services not even being available on it).

This one has everything (including the 9now app which won't run on the old basic because it's running the newer version of Android.. it also allows the stick to have Binge sideloaded on it where the old can't (again because newer version of Android).. only downside to sideloading Binge is that the icon is greyed out/broken looking.. which is fine if you only sideload one app.. I imagine having multiple apps like this would be frustrating tho.

Easy to setup and easy to use - not super sold on the new UI, but it's nice that it lets me sign into my Sister's profile on my Amazon account at the stick level rather than just the prime video app level.

Very happy.. I see now that they have released the 'with tv controls' and '4k' versions.. I would get the tv controls version today now if I could.. though it would be interesting to see if it would work with all tv's.. (my Chromecast with Google TV doesn't control the volume on my old tv despite it being infrafred rather than bluetooth/HDMI-CEC control.. so I don't know what that's about).

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't mirror PC screen or stream via its default Internet browser
Reviewed in Australia on 15 January 2022

I bought this device mostly so I could watch/stream an online concert on a bigger screen than my laptop, except this Fire TV Stick Lite could only manage about 15 seconds before freezing and the Internet browser (Amazon Silk?) claiming a poor internet connection. I then tried to mirror the laptop screen, but that also froze and dropped out about 5 seconds.
I also tested this with a 4G mobile hotspot and placed it right next to the Stick but nope, it still claimed a poor internet connection. I also tested this with my laptop right next to the Stick but it also did not work (screen mirroring).
Trying to find a solution to this online didn't resolve matters either, so it might just be a case of the Lite Stick not having enough RAM or something?
In the end I had to resort to connecting my laptop to my TV via an HDMI cable, which was precisely the scenario I wanted to avoid through buying and setting up this Fire Stick Lite :/

That said, I played a few HD videos from the YouTube app in quick succession and the device had no problems, so I suppose it really depends on what you're intending to use this Stick Lite for.
