Tim Barlow
5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product

Fast delivery and works really well especially for those of us that don't have smart tvs. Please bare-in-mind that you will need to sign-up to SBS On Demand, 7Plus, 9Now and 10Play before adding these apps to be able to start streaming these. So much better than watching it off my laptop

4.0 out of 5 stars All in one, nice and easy

It made our life much more easier as we needed a 1 box do all solution for each of our 2 TVs (1 x smart tv and 1 x not so smart tv :) ) and it serves us ok with prime, netflix, disney+, youtube, optus sport, sbs on demand and spotify as well. I also purchased the ethernet connector for each stick for better connectivity.

Works a charm connected directly to a HDMI port on the TVs. Gets a bit tricky when connected to a HDMI port at the back of a Marantz SR8000 ( It needed to be powered up when connected into the TV directly, once it is powered up and operational, it then is disconnected from the TV and plugged into the HDMI port at the back of the amp, only then images come up. It might just be a quirky firmware with the AMP, i need to have a play around with the setup but this is not a showstopper).

Otherwise, very satisfied and strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent on a great product

This is a product by Amazon that has all the technical features one wants. The product is well built and makes a very good appearance. I tried to use Fetch, the most hopeless product and Foxtel are not much better either. The variety of programming is best with the Amazon Firestick Light especially if you are a member of Amazon Prime. The result of picture quality is outstanding especially if you use a 4K or in my case an 8K TV set,
This is also excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great unit, complex to set up with soundbar NB get 4k version if you want volume controls
Reviewed in Australia on 18 February 2021

Very good unit once set up. Much better than standard TCL smart TV app. However quite a few compatability issues took time to resolve between TV, soundbar and firestick. Much less hassle without soundbar. Basically the info in the firestick app needs to be greatly improved-lots of options with poor explanations of what they do. NOTE: Be aware this unit does not have volume control - you need Firestick 4k for this if want just one remote! I ended up having to buy the 4k too (my mistake)

5.0 out of 5 stars Turns a dumb TV into a smart TV

We have a perfectly-sized but older TV with good picture in the bedroom. Were using chromecast for streaming but Fire Stick is much better. No need to cast from a phone with Fire Stick. Easy to instal and navigate... it's home page is better than our smart TV because it shows all streaming services (including ABC iView, 7 Plus etc) one one screen, including suggestions across platforms. Better youtube interface than our LG smart TV. We're even planning to take Fire Stick on holidays to airbnb, caravanning etc where there's no streaming but good wifi. This is the basic model - the other models have more features including volume control but this one is good enough for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value Firestick
Reviewed in Australia on 29 October 2020

I have over the past year, bought two US Firesticks, one 2nd Gen and the other a 4K stick from Amazon US. I purchased the US Firestick because only the old Basic first Generation was on offer via Amazon Australia.
The U.S. 2nd gen stick was fine but the 4K stick was even better. Unfortunately, Australian Prime Vidow was not accessible on these two U.S. sticks. This new offering by Amazon, is available on Amazon Australia and is fantastic value. It may not have Volume controls or On/Off button but it does have Alexa. Australian streaming sites such as Australian Prime Video, Stan, Netflix, ABC iView , SBS on demand etc are all to be had on installing the stick on your TV. It is much much cheaper too than the the 2nd gen and 4K sticks. I recommend this Firestick. Good value for your dollar. I think Amazon have made it cheaper to entice people onto Amazon Prime membership which gives you free access to their Video channel and music etc. I suspect, they will expand their offerings on the Prime Video too, putting greater pressure on the competition. A plus for Amazon Firestick fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much much better than Chromecast or Fetch TV Mini
Reviewed in Australia on 28 January 2021

Replaced poorly performing mini Fetch TV. The Fetch TV just did not work properly with Amazon Prime or Netflix. Constant delays in using remote (no response) and lots of buffering errors with Prime and Netflix. The Amazon Fire stick is on the same wifi network and the same internet connection as the Fetch TV was on and has no problems whatsoever.

Easy to set up so much better than Google Chromecast! Although some of the UI's aren't as nice as the android versions, skipping/fast forward/back work so much better.
