FOOL MOON is the second of the highly original and immensely popular series of a private-detective-who-is-also-a-wizard novels set with the stunning backdrop of Chicago City and its greater metropolitan area.
This time around the story revolves around werewolves. The book opens with a particularly grisly and violent murder and it is not long before Harry begins to see the dots connecting the clues which form the basis for this entire story. The reader soon learns of the various categories which exist for these supernatural beings, which can be controlled by normal means and which need the use of magic. And which group of werewolves that are uncontrollable even with magic. So who needs more than one guess as to which group the suspected murderer falls into?
Turn the page, read some words, and absorb the magic (pun intended). One victim has become two victims and then there are many victims. The murder count helps to define the nature of the problem and even our Harry is suspected of complicity by the local police and finds himself under arrest on more than one occasion. Lt Murphy is being investigated for internal impropriety and of course she and Dresden manage to step on the toes of the FBI as soon as their investigation commences. And who would have thought that the phases of the moon would prove a watertight alibi in a murder investigation? That is why authors who can come up with an idea such as the Dresden novels are called brilliant.
The writing in this volume is just as confident and sophisticated as book one. The same set of characters are there, with the same levels of sexual tension between Harry and Susan (for example) as well as the same levels of (apparent) dislike between Lt Murphy and Harry. And of course the FBI hates everyone except the FBI so watch out if you happen to look the wrong person in the wrong eye just at the wrong moment.
One flaw in this book occurs to a reader if you happen to like werewolves. I know that sounds ridiculous, and mentioning other writers in a given review is poor form, but when you come across a literary universe where the main characters are living, breathing, loving, and (dare I say it) sexually-aware sentient beings, it is hard to read about them and enjoy them in a story where they represent nothing but a force of pure evil.
Another problem which raises its ugly head is that even the cops (not counting the good cop / bad cop aka Lt. Murphy) appear to be nothing but a bunch of brainless twits. For some reason even though Murphy gets insanely furious at Harry without giving him the chance to defend himself, the rest of the fictional police force acts like robotic clones without an original thought in their heads in their infinite chase for truth and justice. As an example, the wife of Harry’s principal suspect for the murders stages a rain-soaked, night-time decoy for Harry’s benefit which only goes to prove this point even further. And of course the cops fall for this display hook, line and sinker. End of chapter. But at least we got to read about “Bob” and the cat.
The book is not fun to read, or funny, unlike its prequel. “Bob” makes an appearance, briefly, in the latter section of the first half, as well as Dresden’s cat, but to be honest, they are the only light hearted and comic moments of the book. I love “Bob” and I love cats. I love magic, and wizards, and sexy cops. And I love sexy books. I just don’t love this one. But I do like it. I will definitely finish it, and I plan to purchase the entire series from the Amazing Amazon E-Book store as I go along.
Book one was awesome.
Book two is not.
I’m just sayin’.

Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicago's only openly practicing wizard. He is also dead broke. His vast knowledge and magical skills are unfortunately matched by his talent for making powerful enemies and alienating friends. With little more than his integrity left, he accepts an offer of work from Lt. Karin Murphy of Chicago's Special Investigations Unit. He wants to redeem himself in Murphy's eyes and make enough money to quiet his rumbling stomach.
Soon he finds himself pinned between trigger-happy FBI agents, shape-shifiting motorcycle gang members, a threatened mobster boss, and an heir to an ancient curse along with his primal fiance. Throw in environmental activists and a pair of young werewolves in love and you have something of Fool Moon.

Great book and the audible voice is perfect but the narration is reading different text.

The text in the book and the audiobook is so different, whole paragraphs missing, wrong names, every 3rd sentence is changed.. makes it frustrating to follow along. I’m in 2 books in and they are both the same. Swapped words like a bad translation or something

Jim Butcher has crafted a fun, likable character in Harry Dresden. There's lots of supernatural stuff to keep you interested but the strength of the central character is what keeps you reading. Ever the underdog, often misjudged and usually outgunned. Somehow Harry finds a way to win. It isn't logical and it isn't sensible but it is a lot of fun.
Cheers Jim.

The problem is once I started reading it wasn't long before I couldn't stop. This is second in the series, it's still lumpy in ways but that doesn't seem to matter. A good romp, I guess.

Jim Butcher really gets into stride in this one. The first novel ran a little shaky in parts, while being one hell of a read nonetheless. The second reels you right in. I'm so glad I found this series at last. Can't wait to burn through the rest.

I struggled to really connect with this second of the Harry Dresden novels. Whether this was because I was struggling with my concentration in general or because of the storytelling I cannot be sure. It just didn't grip me the way the first novel did.
There is still the same snark present and an overall character development for everyone, but especially Harry, that should have made this a truly enjoyable read. I suspect that it was actually the mythology behind the different ways that one could become a werewolf and the struggles to figure out what type it was that was committing these murders. It just all felt a little bit off somehow, kind of hinky and cobbled together without too much thought. It is an Urban Fantasy Novel so you don't expect versimilitude but you do expect the author to have thoroughly thought through the more fantastical aspects of the tale and it just doesn't feel that way - to this reader at least.
Plenty of guts and gore, if thats your thing - personally, I'm not bothered by it in the slightest but it is starting to feel a little overdone and (dare I say it) boring. Certainly the best bits for me are poor old Harry's attempts to get along in a society that he is not really a part of - this goes for the Magical Community from which he has all but been ex-communicated and also Human Society because he isn't fully Human as far as they are concerned. I love his clumsy social maladroitness.
Definitely not giving up on this series just yet as there is something that does speak to me about it all.
This review has been a long time coming. I actually read this book between the 10th and 16th June 2020 so my memory is a bit foggy about all the plot lines. Fortunately, I have a notebook where I jot some initial thoughts on the book and an overall ranking so between the book blurb and that I did have a reasonable handle on what I thought at the time of reading.

Another Gripping Story In This Urban Fantasy Series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2018Verified Purchase
I have read the previous book in this series and really enjoyed it but I don't think that you have to have read Storm Front to enjoy this one.
This story had everything that I look for in an engaging book; it has a good balance between the various aspects of this story - mystery, crime, thriller, horror, detective and paranormal - and blends them with well written humour that was dry and helped to keep it from being too heavy. This story surprised me a few times and I enjoyed trying to second guess where Mr Butcher would take us next!
I added the narration too and I alternated between reading and listening to the tale. I feel that the narration by James Marston helped to bring our hero, Harry Dresden to life.
Grave Peril (book 3) is already added to my Amazon wish list.

Another really enjoyable book

Again just like the first book it delivers what you expect, magic, supernatural foes, peril, love interest. So far really liking the Dresden files series they are just supernatural action filled wizard detective fun. Quite a bit more peril in this one compared to the first, more of a love interest and the introduction of further future plotlines that promise to be interesting. I can't wait to read the next instalment of this exciting series, although I have to admit that I was slightly put off by the fact it was werewolf based ( in hindsight I guess the title should have clued me in). Which I mean in the sense that just like vampires, zombies etc it has been done a lot in various forms over the years but it was made much more interesting than I was expecting with the introduction of certain elements. It was also a much more grim at points than the first one, as stated previously a lot more peril in this one. All of this together makes for an exciting read though and again can't wait to read the next one. Oh tried watching the first episode of the series that's on Amazon prime but blech could not get into it but this series of books definitely needs its own big budget 18 rated tv or streaming service adaption.

This book stepped it up!

As is expected with most sequels of books with a great concept, this second in the series is a massive are up over the first and gets more gory and more gritty than the first!
There's more obvious relationships being built between the characters now and the writing continues to have me smiling, whether it's because of humour or just the interesting detail and the phlamboyant nature with which Jim Butcher writes. Downloaded and started the next one already!
