Product description
Review
Sodha seeks to redefine Indian food, avoiding rich dishes 'swimming in brown sauce' and opting for the way her family has cooked for generations: fresh, vibrant, seasonal * The New York Times * Sodha's second book confirmed what we sensed from the first: her's is the tastiest, liveliest, spice-infused fare this side of the Sabamarti river. Extra points for the vegetarian focus. * Guardian * An unbridled joy * Nigel Slater * Terrific, flaunting how rich and resourceful vegetarian cooking can be * Sunday Times * A broad range of beautifully-presented veggie dishes . . . Just splendid. * Waterstones * One of our most-used family cookbooks . . . as easy to love as it is to use * Daily Mail * Colourful and joyous . . . a collection of recipes harvested from her Gujarati-British family and drawing on the rich vegetarian tradition of India. * Felicity Cloake, Guardian * A sublimely designed book that is tidily stocked with oft-times wondrous vegetable-based recipes, emboldened with flavors * Forbes * Full of delectable, mouth-watering dishes . . . we guarantee you'll be devouring the entire book in no time. * Stylist * Such a wonderful book * Nigella Lawson *

A wonderful book! I have tried many recipes now and am very impressed - simple to follow, not hard to get ingredients and all dishes come out yummy. One major thing though - the author uses way too much salt for my taste. I have discovered this after making my first rice dish it was almost inedible, way too salty but the flavour was beautiful, so I did it again with 1/3 of the amount suggested. Perfect. After, I just use the amount of salt that I decide would be suitable for all the recipes. However, it is just my personal opinion. Highly recommend this book.

Excellent! Refreshingly fresh recipes which don't end up feeling like a jumbo side dish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 August 2018Verified Purchase
I'm a bit of a carnivore but have found this book great! Both of us have found the recipes really easy to put together, delivering fresh and tasty veggie dishes that don't end up feeling like a jumbo side-dish, like some other books we've tried.
The book isn't trying to replace meat, in any way, but just seems to put together some substantial vegetarian recipes that you could easily substitute meat into, if you so wished, however we've really enjoyed all the veggie options we've tried to date. Biggest win, so far, have been the mushroom and chestnut samosa that taste 'meatier' than the meat versions we've tried making in the past and packed with bags of flavour.
Since we bought it, the book has been in use so much that I've gifted another couple of copies to friends and picked up the meat book.

Fantastic book

As soon as this book arrived, I went through every recipe and put a page sticker on each one I wanted to try - and there were many!! Tonight I have cooked first recipe which was the roasted vegetables with a madras sauce. The recipe was very easy to follow and the result was near perfection. One of my favourite sauces at my local indian restaurant is madras but I have never managed to successfully recreate at home. If this had been slightly hotter, it would have been perfect and as good as my local restaurant! Just needs a little tweak - and I know where to tweak it! The recipe included fresh ginger and I substituted ginger from a jar. Next time I will use fresh ginger. We have a traditional Indian restaurant nearby and a fusion Indian restaurant. At the fusion restaurant, they do a muslam sauce. I have never been able to find this sauce despite all my googling! However, there is a recipe in this book for a mussalam sauce. I am hoping this is going to be similar. There are so many great recipes in this book and the best vegetarian one I have ever found. Happy days ahead!!
Update: have tried 3 of the recipes now and each one has turned out perfect. Yesterday i made the butter masala paneer curry- beautiful lovely flavours, and also the Hill station salad - again lovely vibrant flavours and so simple to make.

Delightful!

Thoroughly enjoyable book. I have made a few of the dishes & so far they have all been delicious. The Rajma is a particular favourite, though I have not attempted the 'serves 40' version :) !
Well written, clear instructions, with timings where appropriate & the anecdotes about each recipe are entertaining & amusing.
I will certainly be making a lot more food from this book over the coming months

The inside of the book is as beautiful and colourful as the outside

Bought this for my husband's birthday because he loves Indian food which sadly I can't eat much of due to an allergy. The inside of the book is as beautiful and colourful as the outside, my husband is really enjoying cooking the recipes, and he's even found a few recipes that are safe for me to eat. The ones that I have eaten have been INCREDIBLY tasty. Top score for easy to follow and replicate recipes!
