It is a concept which I myself have been ambivalent about. To be frank I remain to be convinced on many of the points outlined in this book or similar books like it. It seems rather cruel to suppose that persons who have experienced misfortune are the most liable to further misfortune by virtue of some sort of determinism/fatalism. Or worse still that they actively "invited" it some how into their life in the first place.
There is also some sort of metaphysical/philosophical idealism central to the ideas, all is mind and nothing external to it actually exists. This could be as simple as what researchers call "confirmation bias", paying attention to anything and everything which supports your hypothesis/expectations/hopes and ignoring all evidence to the contrary. Or it could be something more, like what Darren Brown was scathingly critical of in his book Happiness, considering it comparable to "faith healers" and "confidence tricksters".
All that in mind, I found this an interesting book, its good to be able to trace the beginning of some of the thinking which is trending these days. Personally, I can see how many of the author's conclusions could be reached through observation, without much in the way of philosophical training or consideration of insights about logical fallacies, tricks of perspective or insights from psychology/psychoanalysis.
The book also includes background information and biographical information on the author in the introduction which is also interesting (more so, I thought, than some of the books actual content). It is a hardback with the title embossed/indented on the cover, its of a reasonably good quality and part of a series of books if you are inclined towards collecting books to a complete "library" of sorts. The "dust jacket", is half the size of the book it wraps around but provides detail about content, author and series editor.

Unfortunately what it fails to mention is that almost all of the examples/stories in this book revolve around religion and believing. Next to none of this is motivational unless you're already obsessed with religion and believing opportunities will just show up out of nowhere if you wish for them. I was hoping for more and would've settles with a few stories about God/Jesus/Praying but this is literally almost every single page

Tom Butler-Bowdon is the author of the 50 Classics Series and he has written the introduction tho this book. He is also the series editor of the Capstone Classics of which this book is one.
Florence Scovel Shinn (September 24, 1871 in Camden, New Jersey – October 17, 1940) was a book illustrator and an artist with a passion for life philosophy and spiritual advice. She became a New Thought spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer in her middle years and she wrote this book (which was her first and in certain circles her most influential book) in 1925.
'The Game of Life' is one of the few classic texts that is considered to be relevant even today, after so many years.
I must admit this was an interesting read, spiritual and quite religious at times. The idea presented in this book is that if you view your life as a game which has rules for you to follow you will have less stress and be happier and more successful. If you manage to attune yourself with these principles and laws, you can easily create a better reality for yourself and achieve the “square of life”, which consists of the four focal points that make up your life: wealth, health, love and self-expression. That by shaping each of these parts of your life, the way you want to, will ultimately result in a memorable and happy life.
The concepts discussed in this book include the law of expectancy, the divine pattern, the law of karma, the law of substitution, the power of words, the law of use, the law of forgiveness, the law of love, the law of use, and the law of non resistance.
Love life and life will love you back.
As I said earlier ... an interesting read. I'm not sure I believe in the laws of the universe but I must admit some of it makes sense.
A recommended read for anyone interested in things along the line of *The Law of Attraction* and similar.
I hope you found this review helpful.

There is an element on spirituality and also religion so I’d possibly avoid that if that isn’t something you’re into however if you’re able to keep an open mind this is a real classic and very interesting especially from historical point of view. It is also very easy to follow especially considering it was written such a long time ago.
The book itself is beautifully finished and is of a lovely high-quality hardback with a nice dust cover it looks very modern but classic. A good gift idea for those who like to read self-help books but haven’t come across a vintage one before.
