So, it has been more than a year since I left the original review and I have found nothing special about this oil. I used to use it on the wet hair before blowdrying my hair but the effect was really minimal in terms of smoothness, silkiness & manageability and didn't seem to repair the damage so I started using as a finishing oil. It works better that way. It gives shine and smoothness. BUT there is a lot of finishing oils on the market that do the same with a more reasonable price tag. I don't think I will purchase Oribe oil again.
[Original review in July 2018] After having used this for a month, I started to believe some of the negative reviews here claiming this wasn't authentic because I didn't see much result. There is so much hype for this hair oil in the beauty industry and it even received some awards. But my chemically treated, damage and dry hair wasn't really in better condition with this oil... So I decided to buy another one from Bloomingdale's, and I figured this oil just wasn't for my hair. I am pretty sure that this is authentic. The sent, the color, the texture, the package - everything seems exactly the same as the one from Bloomingdale's.
My hair is thick and somewhat coarse, and Oribe Gold Lust Oil is definitely not the greatest for my hair type because this oil separates hair strands, which gives hair volume. So this may be good for fine hair.
So here is what Oribe claims this oil is about (and my opinion to it):
-Luxurious lightweight oil - I don't think this is that lightweight. Pretty much the same as regular Moroccan oil (not the light one). So I struggled a bit in the beginning to find the best amount for my hair. My hair feels heavy if it's too much.
-Helps prevent damage and protect hair without weighing hair down - I can't really tell if it prevents damage and protects. I guess it takes more time to really see and feel that.
-Adds high shine and silkiness while detangling and reducing frizz - It does add shine but not to the ends, and the same with silkiness. The ends of my hair is very damaged and dry and that's the part I need help, but no difference in that most important part. I can't say anything about frizziness since I have had straightening perm done, but if they are talking about damage frizziness, it does nothing to it.
-Provides thermal protection and reduces dry time - It's always good to have thermal protection. Regarding the dry time, no change.
-Penetrates the hair shaft to help restore, strengthen and condition even the most damaged locks: My hair is THE "most damage locks" but haven't seen any improvement at least in the past 7 weeks that I have been using this oil.
This is my first experience with this brand and Im somewhat disappointed. I was so excited to get this oil in the mail today however the box it came in wasn't sealed and the box itself looked quite knocked about. The bottle was greasy as if some product had leaked and the amazing smell everyone raves about just was not there. So whether this is an old product, a return or a knockoff I don't know. The oil itself appears to be much like any other argan oil but maybe with time it will work miracles. I had hoped for some wonderfully fragranced luxury oil but this is not the case.
I read about this product in the NY Times where they were talking to hair dressers in New York on how to handle dried out winter hair. My girlfriend was complaining about the same time about the same issue, so I bought the travel size to try it out. We both love it, and she's a tough critic. She took it to her hairdresser to show her the product. A little goes a long way so I'd stick to the small size, it's expensive but it works great!
This oil is amazing it doesn't leave your hair oily and I have very fine hair. Love the smell as well. I have to hide it from my teenage twin daughters because they love it well. I've tried so many oils from Josie Maran to. Other expensive brands and this is my favorite
This is one of the most expensive hair oils I have tried, but it really is worth every penny. I have very processed, dry hair. This product gives it amazing shine and does not leave a ton of sticky residue on my hands. I can also re-apply the next day without it weighing my hair down and giving it a greasy appearance. As a bonus, it also has a lovely scent. Highly recommended.
Very light weight oil that smells wonderfully !! I apply it to my hair and my skin and it leaves everything shiny, soft and silky. A small amount goes a long way and this is why I purchase the smaller bottle.
I purchased this product at the recommendation of my colorist. It works well as a hydrating oil that detangles my long, fine hair without weighing it down too much. While expensive, I think it is good enough that i will be buying again.
