Legendary Jamaican artist Frederick “Toots” Hibberts returns with his first studio release in more than a decade. Got To Be Tough is an energizing provocation that renews the near six-decade career of the man who launched a new sound and genre with his 1968 release, Do The Reggay. Got To Be Tough is a reminder that through Toots’ creative veins run all the roots and shoots of the Black Diaspora. Blues, soul, r’n’b, funk, jazz, reggae, African griots – Toots honors, embodies and owns them. Throwing down an authoritative guide: how to survive and thrive among our earth challenges.

When you listen to the final albums of Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen they sound old. They have a wisdom and perspective that comes with age but they are obviously and past their physical peak and you can hear that in their voices. The same is true of Bob Dylan's latest offering. The same is not true of Frederick "Toots" Hibbert. His voice sounded as young, fresh and strong as ever. Hard to believe he was 77 when he recorded this. He did share the wisdom of Cash, Cohen and Dylan though. These is a fine collection of songs.
Hard to believe that he is no longer with us. R.I.P. Toots
Warning, warning being my favourite track off this album as it reminds me so much of my childhood, discovering reggae music and listening to my mom's vinyl in my bedroom in the early 70's.
A great dancehall vibe on this album along with some rocksteady, ska and old soul. Toots was and is a reggae giant. Unmistakable voice that bellows out from his heart.
He was about to come to England after the US on tour to promote this album and passed away before knowing how this, his final piece of work was appreciated and loved by his adoring fans. 1 Love brother Toots.
Be very difficult to replace this talent, and a sad loss to the world of music.
