Worth the wait... another cracker from Marian

I was so excited for Marian Keyes new book to come out. Living in Australia (but a Paddy originally) her books are like a little taste of home for me. The first cup of Barry’s with Golden Vale milk after a long flight home, if you will. This book is superb, it moves quickly, and the characters are fun and relatable. We all know a Ferdia! Bridie is my favourite, wee precocious hen. Many a LOL over Bridie. I love the insight into yet another breed of Irish family from ‘up home’, Jessie and her bunnies, and even the poignant observations about Irish retail and hospitality. So apt, so true. The worst thing about this book was that my mum bought it for me in Ireland and I had to wait 3 weeks for her to bring it over. I’m going to read it again this week! Probably with a cup of Barry’s tea.

I'm not one to shirk finishing a book. And certainly not one of bestselling author Marian Keyes. And I tried, I really tried. But there were just too many characters all thrown at you within the first 10% of the book, I couldn't work out one from t'other. The book uses multiple POVs - even more confusing. I strode manfully on, to 28% according to my Kindle, but eventually, if you are not enjoying yourself, then you give up. Which I did. Sorry, cannot rate this book positively. I know I must be in a minority on this book so I'll certainly give Marian a second chance.

This book had me at "hello". People always write un-putdownable, but this one actually had me obsessed. The characters and the plot were so well handled that I was really sad when it ended. I have been reading Marian' s books for decades and will continue to do so.
Thank you for another great read, can't wait for the next one!

I have always enjoyed Marian Keyes novels, particularly the early ones. I have liked all her later ones too, but not as much as this wonderful book, Grown UPS. I loved it from start to finish. I loved the characters, the story line, everything about it.
The Casey family is big and complex. I particularly loved the female characters, Jessie, Cara and Nell. My new favourite Marian Keyes novel, and favourite book of the year so far!

Agree with the other reviewers who also found tbis book hard to follow due to many characters and switching from one to the other all the time. Didnt take to the people at all and found the language irritating. Most of all it is boring daily trivia and I just couldnt be bothered to keep on reading in the hope tbat something would happen. Sadly it has put me off Marion Keyes as an author. i am probably not her target audience.

Being a popular author, this was our Bookclub’s choice so I bought the book. Sadly, I was massively disappointed.
I didn’t care for any of the characters & felt their personalities weren’t developed enough. I found the plot quite boring, uneventful and without any substance. This title was definitely not to mine or any of my Bookclub friends taste.

Her earlier work was funnier, but this shows her clear ability as just an all around good writer. Fascinating once you get your head around them, to have a voyeuristic view on how the characters struggled with various issues.

It took me some time to sort out the different families and characters and for awhile I didn't think I was going to get there...but when I did, bingo -
a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Really loved this book! Reminded me of Marianne’s earliest books sassy, witty humour with no apologies needed!
You felt apart of the family or wanted to be part of the family. I think there was a part of me in all the female leads and I could definitely have been Jessie that’s for sure!
A cracking read from my favourite author! Love ya X

Very lengthy......

I love Marian Keyes. I own and have (mostly) unreservedly loved her books, I follow her on Twitter and I went to see her in London last week where she was as funny, thoughtful and endearing as ever..But (unfortunately) I don’t think this is one of her better books. Although there’s still a lot of witty sensitive insight into real people’s lives, travails, and predicaments, this book would have been improved by some judicious editing, a less clunky plot timeline and some better route through the maelstrom of characters and generations. The family tree at the beginning helps a bit (though it is too small to read easily on a kindle!) but not enough. There are also some wholly well intentioned elements such as the plight of asylum seekers in Ireland but, sadly, the character around whom this is based doesn’t really take off as a character nor does she seem to fit comfortably into the plot line. The flashback did not work for me, it was simply confusing and, to be honest there’s not that much plot.....
It’s still highly readable. Marian is an excellent writer and I’ll still love to read everything she writes. But I hope her next book (possibly another Rachel book, as she told us last week) is a bit better edited than this one.

Lost the plot

I thought this book was awful. it was boring and the structure of the chapters was irritating ,constantly referring to past happenings. . Too many characters, all of whom seemed to have some sort of hangup......not a normal one amongst what seemed like a cast of hundreds. I got through about a third of the book and gave up ......a waste of money.

Oh bliss, I won’t say anything about the story content as lots of people have done that already, but I will say the book is such an absolute 5* joy! It gave a lot of food for thought, a lot of smiles, a few tears, ....I was sad to finish the book but I’m sure I’ll read it again at some point. I’ve read all of MK’s books, enjoyed them all, but this was probably my favourite to date. I subscribe to her newsletter as she just makes me laugh, and she obviously puts her soul into her books, not easy. I do agree that it was a bit challenging to take on board all the characters, but just read the first bit twice then you’ll be fine, and it’s so worth it. Thank you, it was just fantastic.
