At first I was a bit annoyed at how the story was based on flashbacks of flashbacks, however, the author managed to weave a very interesting tale that had me gripped as well as impressed. Stick with it, it is good writing.

This book was fabulous! Not only do you get a continuation from Halo 3 ODST but you get more of a story behind the Spartan IVs. Sadly this book does contain many sad and mentally tearing sentences that are surely hard too read and fathom after playing the games but it all puts the halo universe into perspective. Too all you halo fans I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have :)

Love this novel to bits, not only because of Buck's perspective but how the story follows a rich storylines Alpha-Nine and the halo universe would reckon to any ODST fans out there

Good read, nice backstory to a good character, the first person approach didn't really suit at times

Buck is back!

This was a fantastic read. Told in first person and capturing Nathan Fillions character, Buck, to a Tee I was surprised at how much modern Halo was in the book. When I say modern Halo I am refering to 343 industries Halo universe. Since Halo 4 and the introduction of the Spartan iv program not much has been told about them. Not in games and not alot in books. This book sort of acts as both an epilogue of sorts to Halo: ODST and a prologue to Halo 5. At least in terms of how Buck and his Apha Nine team went from gung ho and gobby ODST marines to being some of the first recruits in the Spartan division of the UNSC.
As mentioned, the story recounts Bucks steps in first person and a divisive quality is that the story is thrown around all over the place. The story starts with a flashback and then goes into further flashbacks before seemingly forgetting which flashback is more relevant to the tale being told. This is done deliberately as if Buck is telling his story to someone and just like a person would with alot to say, he gets his tale mixed up and convoluted. I could understand if this mechanic would put off many less patient readers but personally I loved tge realistic nature of the story being told by a guy with alot of history behind him.
Overall I would highly recommend this story to anyone who would like to flesh out the Halo universe. A cracking read.

Fantastic for all Halo fans

I honestly can't praise this enough. If you like Halo, and if you're even remotely fond of Buck this is a guaranteed great read. Even if you don't like Buck you will probably still enjoy it, well written, full of interesting intersections in Bucks career that we didn't know of before including how he was enrolled to be a Spartan. Don't forget, "if Buck were any better, he'd be Spartan". Well now he is.

Love me some Buck

Apart from the description of Halo 3: ODST on its entirety, this book feels like everything Halo ought to be. Forbeck is terrific in his adoption of Buck's voice, and the exploration of the character's unheard stories are a constant excitement.
