Stepping Up The Pressure

Jason has learnt that Earth does have magic and societies that govern it. With the universal membrane breaking down and magic rising the monster swarms start. Earth becomes a battleground and civilisation begins to break down. This isn't helped by factionalism both between the magical societies and within them. The bodycount rises and not all of Jason's friends will make it. Being Jason he doesn't handle it well at all. I liked it that several characters took him to task repeatedly for taking responsibility for the choices of others. A well paced story if a little grim in places. But that is what happens when the walls of reality start to unravel, the apocalypse starts and ancient vampires start to wake up and want to restore their glory days. Ended on a bit of a cliffhanger but considering this entries length unavoidable. Looking forward to the major throwdown in the next one.

I love how the MC is a believable and flawed individual. I've been listening to the audible version of this story and enjoy that they have an Australian voice actor to give the MC authenticity. The tale continues. It's not wondrous, like the first book, but it's a solid story that relies less on the mechanics of progression and magic and is more about storytelling and the character' s progression. Thank God, I say. There's got to be somewhere where you can find a decent story pitched at adults buried amongst the dynamics that we all love in LitRPG. This author is a storyteller and that's what I most love about his books.

Honestly equally enjoyed and was disappointed by this entry.

Suffers from the same as book 4 but even more so sadly, which might be a case of being the "middle book" but might also just be the style has changed. Too much fragmentation of the narrative: we get a great many litte short story scenes that don't add much, and then are later re-addressed in the main narrative which makes the side those short stories seem like wasted time. Perhaps these worked well in a serial format but they are terrible in a book.
It drastically slows down the pacing of the plot and made me feel like too much info was being crammed in.

Ironically, Jason gets told the same thing in the narrative. To paraphrase, he's told he does too much and tries to be too flashy when a simple decisive stroke would be more effective.
Same thing applies to the author here. There's a lot of well described scenes giving extra, extra, extra info about peripheral characters and their motivations but not many of those scenes are actually needed since a lot of what they convey gets covered in the main narrative. A few of them maybe are, but honestly after just finishing the book I couldn't think of one off the top of my head that stands out.

With that being said, the main narrative when we get to it, is still really good and has me interested in the next entry. I just hope the style and narrative choices settle a bit more, as books 1-3 were a lot better and didn't feel as if they suffered as much from this fragmentation and slow progression in the narrative. Not really sure how to actually rate this but because I am still interested and not being definitely turned off I'll go 4/5

There's a lot of emotion and drama in this book. So much so that there's very little space for anything else. The trope of having to do bad things for good intentions is heavy throughout the series but this addition takes it to a new level. It felt more like a soap opera than a typical action packed litrpg.
Also what's up with the ending? Or rather. A lack thereof. No big fight. No epic revenge. No awesome advancements. Just "and things keep getting worse. The end." It's as if the book was supposed to be 15% longer but then the editors decided it was too long and to put the conclusion in the next book. "Join us in book 6 to find out the ending of book 5."

Book 5 continues to satisfy as a thumping good read that delivers laughter, suspense, emotion and a great story, and keeps you turning the pages well after you should put the book down to do other things.
The only bad part about it is the wait for
the next volume in the series.

It is written brilliantly and the action and stat/spell writing is top notch. Due to the scale of charecters involved in events it has become just a bit hard to keep up with everything, although author does a fantastic job bringing in new characters and giving them full personalities quickly!

My only real concern is a personal one, exponential power growth. I love a good power growth story and hope he doesn't jump straight to super powered before doing some good old adventuring!

A good continuation of the story and well worth a read!
