This is the third of what promises to be a lengthy series by Joy Ellis who is fast becoming one of my favourite detective writers. The characters are developing nicely and the atmosphere in the Fens is beautifully described, the plot in all books is very believable and gripping.
DCI Nikki Galena and her sergeant Joseph Easter are back again with their team. It makes a refreshing change that here we have a normal police woman, who's the boss and whilst feisty (she comes out fighting for her own sanity and the safety of her team) she's not drowning in depression or prescription drugs/alcohol as other detectives in this genre often are portrayed.)
There are many twists and turns in the plot as we try to work out what is going on in this incredibly fast paced thriller crime novel. The book starts with a death, the victim was guarded however by a highly sophisticated security system and there is no apparent entry into or out of the building. Evidence points to police revenge, especially as the police's arch enemy has been sighted locally but nothing is as it seems....
Even though the 3rd book in the series each book can stand alone, as without having read the others and you would know what is happening and still enjoy it. That being said knowing the back stories gives a better reading experience and I am particularly enjoying the character development.
This is a great story full of suspense with twists and turns from start to finish. I am looking forward to more Nikki and Joseph adventures, as always, I was gripped all the way through. 5 Stars - This was yet another Thrilling read.

Another great story. I felt so sorry for the team in this book. Despite all of their hard work they were all hurt in some way by a twisted character. The psychological torture the team goes through seems to be coming from an old enemy, but nothing is what it seems.
I really like this series, but I don’t think I want to be part of this team as it’s too dangerous. They always end up at the hospital. This is a mystery that is difficult to solve as a reader, therefore it keeps you thinking right to the very end. There is a very satisfying ending for one character in particular.

I love the Joy's characters and the style which combines correct police procedure, fast action, and access to the innermost thoughts. Di Nikki Galenna and holy Joe Easter are back and in danger as they come under attack from an unknown enemy. Their team Cat and Dave also come under attack. Hard slogging work and some good luck finally start to turn the tide their way. Another great novel in the Fenland series. Nikki and Joe come closer in some ways and Joe's daughter appears. So that story continues.
The action and technology is well researched and so the criminal activities and the investigation is believable without any logic holes. I did think that the end was a bit rushed but was not disappointed by the overall story which had to be read.
If you like well written books with action this scores for Joy Ellis and now for the next one

This is my favourite by far of the series. (I have read number 4)
I read the whole novel on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. This book ran you right through the gamut of emotions - heartbreaking with a shocking death at the start of the novel, fear at the team being stalked by a madman leaving no clues and joy at the possible beginnings of a new relationship and the tenderness that surrounds it.
I won't give spoilers away but I SO hope the author has another DI Nikki Galena in the wings, (after 4) I don't think I can hang on for too long.
I'm off now to read more of the author's other novels.

Gripping story beautifully read. The relationship between the two characters is building. No terribly violent scenes only historical.
Sometimes I was just gripped by the atmosphere created by the vocabulary and the delivery of the story by the narrator,
Good twist.

Third in the series and I'm just hoping more books will appear before I come to the end of the current series. Joy Ellis has the ability to grab tension and keep it rolling at top speed.
Her description of the Fens makes them come alive in a way that I wish I could travel to see them, they sound beautiful.
Her characters are all very different, but cog in well with each other.
I love these books, they are well worth reading, especially if the weather is cold and drear and you can afford to just sit and read.

Found 'Hunted on the Fens' to be the best yet. Hard to put down - gripping as declared in the promo. The mystery of who done it leads the reader guessing right to the end. Has suspense, adds personality to each of the characters. Most enjoyable read.

What a brilliant read this was

This series (of which I hope there will be many more) is getting better and better all the time. I've come across very few books that can hold my attention for more than a couple of hours without me getting a teense bit bored, but the Fens series are totally the exception. I just have to keep on reading until its finished. The plot is exciting, there's plenty of action with a big build up at the end that doesn't disappoint. Gallena's team work very well together, all having each others backs...bar one in this case.
In this book the culprit is cyber crime, with help from a human being. Cyber crime is becoming increasingly common these days with bank accounts being emptied, and government agencies having their top secret records hacked into from places halfway around the world. So the plot is of its time. Big business it appears to be!
I don't think a glossary of English slang at the back for US reader's is necessary though. They don't do it for us do they.
Onto book number four.

I have just written a 4* review for book two which I read a few weeks ago. Having just finished book three, I truly am amazed at all the five star reviews! For me, this went round in circles, red herrings, investigations that were totally implausible and motivated by no decent police work.
And with reading on a kindle, I can tell you that it was at 90% before the story finally unfolded! And only then did it become a page turner. Before that lots of time wasted on irrelevant stories about the Carborough estate..... and after the initial brutal incident, Nikki still sent two uniformed constables out for coffee!!
Even worse the entire case was wound up by reported speech between Nikki and Joseph. Even more non-believable was that this set of criminals (who bordered on the supernatural for their abilities, insight, observation of everyone and anyone (ringing Joseph’s daughters mates mobile???) the explanation was almost as spluttering unbelievable. A highly skilled team go to work because one of their members bore a grudge which was totally unjustified incidentally, and which surely such a highly trained set of operatives would have investigated!?
I just feel this was churned out formulaic stuff and a real let down.

A plot/purpetrator that seemed a little far-fetched but none-the-less gripping.

Ellis creates characters you want to invest in and 'The Fen Series' book 3 is no exception. In fact you feel you know D.I Galena and her right hand man Joe Easter so well that it's hard to believe this is only the third book in the series!
A few minor quibbles such as the D.I not realising how quickly a computer virus can get a grip on your device (I checked the date of publish and I feel I was well aware of this years before 2016 - and I don't work in a technology field). Ellis writes well though and she draws you in with her characters, crimes and pace. I can visualise the slightly ominous but misty beauty of the marshes as much as the hard living Carborough estate and as it's fiction, I can forgive the odd quibble.

Nikki and her team are up against a dangerous opponent: someone who wants compensation and is targeting every team member. As they face against time to discover who the culprit is no one is safe.
This third Nikki Galena novel is a roller coaster of a ride. It is edge of the seat gripping and I had to keep reading to see how it all panned out.
Highly recommended.

I can’t remember reading a thriller that had me constantly in a gut churning mood. It was one thing after another for Nikki and her team and I suffered along with them. It is brilliantly written with characters that you totally believe in. You understand all their problems and travel with them all the way until the twisting end. Highly recommended.
