I managed to install this on my road bike and used it with the pannier PakRak bag. The product is decent, the instructions are pretty terrible though. It doesn't do a good job of describing which parts are for going where or how to hook anything up. I had to refer to product pictures to figure some things out. They are clearly instructions for a older model. I had to bend the rods for the bike 'stays' which was fine. They cut into my break line a bit until I had them sufficiently bent to avoid too much rubbing. Once I had everything really tight it all holds together without much rattling. I'm glad to have moved away from using a backpack and actually bike much more easily with the rack. I would recommend a saddle bag in the future, instead of a pannier. It makes the bike a little more top/rear heavy and my bike tends to topple sideways when leaning stationary. Once you're moving though, it is smooth sailing anyway.
This product would have received a 5 star however the supplied hardware was not a match for the pre-drilled holes in the frame and the rounded for the base should have been low profile, however after grabbing a few slightly larger ones it was a snap and looks and operated great as I took it for a 32km ride with zero issues.
Review UPDATE, make sure you put, locktight or something on with it, the bolts come off, didn't notice until it was rubbing against my tire. Also on the bottom sides there's no hooks or anything to strap things down to it, and when you bungee cord something it slides everywhere.
This is my review, bought with my own money hahaha.
Unfortunately I will be sending this product back. My bike has disc brakes and there is a small tag on this rack that says it is not compatible with bikes with disc brakes. I wish I would have read that in the write up before ordering it.
Seems to be very well made. Light weight, but sturdy. Installation was easy, if you read and follow the instructions, which is very clear. There are some room for customization to fit many sizes of bikes. Highly recommended.
The only modification I had to do is a grind little bit of a lower support rod side. Everything else first perfectly and takes no time to assemble. I also added a crown locks so it will not unscrew itself overtime. Very light and very sturdy. My frame is standard, no back suspension and this unit fits 99% perfectly. I looked at my second bike and it would take some modifications to make it fit. Please check you bike and make sure you have everything to mount it. It is not possible to make a back rack that will fit all bikes. If you have a standard frame - you will have no problems.
I've been using this rack with Schwins' side bags. The rack is really sturdy and light. The screws holding the bottom leg to the frame extends a bit too much and pierced through the fabric of the back of my bag before I was able to notice the damage :-( (hence why 4 starts instead of 5). I've put some electric tape over the screws and Gorilla tape over the holes in my bags and haven't had a problem since.
This looked like a great carrier rack for my new mountain bike however I could not install. The mounting brake would not work on one side due to the disc brake system on one side. The brake system occupies the area where the carrier rake would need to be secured. Unfortunately it will not work and I will have to return.
