I am a violin teacher myself. I read all of Lauren's book with great interest, and I learned a lot which is why I would recommend this book to teachers as well as parents. We need all the help we can get and this book certainly does give a lot of it. What particularly impressed me (remember this is my job, too) was her third section on Building Resilience and Maturity. There is all kinds of invaluable advice on how to help your children (and your students) handle auditions, recitals, and competitions. Apart from the excellent emotional and psychological indications, there are also lots of really practical things that many parents do not know, many teachers may not know or forget to tell you (we all have our gaps), and things you wouldn't think of on your own that could make a huge difference in outcome of a student's audition. The study of a musical instrument is a complicated thing for everyone: teacher, student and parent. This book will help any parent cope with the curve balls that music study will throw at you, from infantile temper tantrums to high octane competitions. It will also help to fill in any little lacunae a teacher may have or may have forgotten. There's a lot of great information for everyone. Well written, easily understood, and well laid-out by an obviously very compassionate as well as expert teacher.

This book is a revelation to any parent or music major. Am sharing it w/long time friend who was the music director of both Fargo ND high schools. As a struggling trumpet & french horn student (high school) in the 60's, this explains our motivations... why couldn't we concentrate on practicing? Helpful w/my own son, a "Rock legend in his own mind", who couldn't concentrate on trombone in HS, but EASILY learned piano keyboard in a college class, in ONE SEMESTER in U of M. Says my friend Dik (music school recording engineer, producer, and bass guitarist in two Minneapolis bands, incl. "Scotty Miller Band": "Buy this book!".....

As a full-time violin teacher in San Antonio, I'm recommending that all of the families I work with read this book.

I see it as a useful guide and reference for parents who want to utilize their private teachers' expertise to the fullest, and achieve successful outcomes, even through challenges in motivation and attitude. There are no shortcuts to excellence, but certainly there are reliable, effective, positive pathways to seek. In many ways, this book demystifies those pathways to success in private lessons.

Even if you, as a parent or teacher, do not 100% agree with every bit of advice, at least the book opens up many potential productive conversations with the parent-teacher team.

As a former elementary school violinist, I sure wish this book had been around when I was growing up. There's so much great information here. Out of frustration I eventually abandoned my violin. I've often wished I hadn't but just felt I wasn't capable enough. Today, as I read this book, I feel like I understand what went wrong. Turns out, it wasn't about my capability. What a revelation! I'm actually feeling inspired to give this beautiful instrument another try. Will be buying additional copies to share with my family and friends, too.
