Firstly, the USB C interface on mine doesn't work at all - it works fine connected with normal USB A (or via a USB A to USB C adapter) but not using the USB C plug with either of my macs.
Secondly, even when it does work, the metal body of this thing gets *hot* - uncomfortably so if you have to touch it afterwards, even when idle. It's also very poorly designed; you can't change the SD card without removing the entire unit from the USB port, and it's very awkward to remove and insert the card compared to most with a standard slot.
Overall a good idea, poorly executed.
Unfortunately my unit must be defective, because read and write speeds max out at 1MB/s. I tested this USB reader on my MacBook (late 2008 model) with 32GB cards (old Sandisk class 4 used for data, as well as brand new Sandisk class 10 used to record HD videos). I have another old and cheap Chinese USB A card reader, which operates at the expected speeds. Needless to say, I am disappointed (the product return window is now closed).
UPDATE: I get very decent USB transfer speeds on my Windows computer (80MB/s read, 16MB/s write), so the problem seems specific to the MacBook hardware (bad / incompatible USB protocol implementation?). I bumped-up the number of stars to reflect this.
I'm going to keep it short...
transferring files is super fast. I was using a 128gb Mirco SD XC class 10 card.
you'll notice it gets hot...
This is the 1st day of using the product so will update in the future.
It’s also great for grabbing recordings from the PS4 share feature. One side for PS4, and the other for the iPad USB C. Great purchase
(MicroSD testata: Sandisk Extreme 64GB Classe 10 - UHS U3, dichiarata appunto fino a 90 MB/s)
