This book was an enjoyable read. At first I didn't think I would like it but then it got more interesting to me. The beginning of the book introduces you to many different terms and words that I didn't understand. As the book continues you start to realize what all these foreign terms actually mean. By the middle of the book you get more comfortable and characters form connections. This is the part that I enjoyed the most. By the end of the book the characters form bonds and each bond is different and exciting. Relationships evolve and alliances are formed. All of the characters are so distinct that it is hard to decide who is your favorite. This book itself ended on a good note so I decided to continue with the series. Meredith and her boys will continue to enjoy their adventure in the next book: "A Caress of Twilight". This book is a good read and a completely different universe from the vampire love stories that I love so much. Try it for yourself and see if you like it.
For the most part I enjoyed A Kiss of Shadows. Merry is a part fey in hiding in the human world. The beginning was great. There was mystery, cases to solve, people out to get her but she wasn't sure who. As the book progressed things got a little murkier...she was getting it on with some hot fey, but there were some super, super creepy moments. Think tentacle sex...
Much of the plot seemed contrived so Merry had to continue her sexcapades (but I'm not opposed to sex for convenience) so that might bother some people. To be honest I felt there were a few plot contradictions when it came to why and when, Fae can and can't use magic.
It's gritty and sexy and Laurell K. Hamilton has clearly set this up to continue (especially the sex) in the remainder of the series. Is it for you? IF YOU LOVE: In the end people who like dark UF Romance will like this. IF YOU HATE: Creepy sex, then avoid this.

Reading this book is just fun. I won't take the time to review all of LKH's books, but this is one of her better ones and deserves a special mention. Suspend your disbelief, enter the alternate universe that the author has created, and just enjoy reading the book. On par with the alternate "modern" universe Piers Anthony created for the Incarnations of Immortality series, this book is worth a look for carrying on a fine tradition of "what-ifs". LKH has an entertaining writing style akin to older gumshoe detective novels in some cases and Harlequin pot-boilers in others. Nevertheless, her voice is her own. For a fast, fun read, pick up this book and check out some of her others.
I'm not usually a fan of Elven lore. The only reason I purchased the book was because it was written by one of my favorite authors, Laurell K. Hamilton. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be a huge understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, the plot and the characters. I read a lot of what I consider to be unfair reviews comparing Merry to Anita Blake. There is no comparison other than they both like a little ammunition and are women of power. Personally, it would have been a disappointment for me to have a carbon copy of Anita in this book. Merry will grow into her powers and develop in future books just as Anita has had the opportunity to do. With her different background, she is free to do things that would be out of character for Anita. Please be aware, that if you don't enjoy erotica in your stories then this is not the book for you as it goes far beyond what we've seen from the Anita Blake series. However, if you enjoy a good romp and some sexually generated heat then you'll love Merry and her band of characters. My only question is when do we get the next one?
I can understand that people might think some of the parts of the story were perverse or disgusting, but I read this book as if I was reading about a completely alien culture (which I was) and the weirdness of it all made it feel more real to me. I think that if this immortal race had the same attitudes as us about sex, it would not only be boring, but surprising that they were so much like us after thousands of years.
I thought the story was fun and a great fantasy for any woman who wouldn't mind a harem of beautiful men. :) The author could definitely cut back on the descriptions and the phrase "the pain was sharp and immediate" was used like 4 times, but it was a fun tale to get lost in. It was certainly nice to read something that really felt new for a change.
I was a little confused in the beginning but it came together for me quickly. When I first started reading it I thought maybe I picked up a book in the middle of a series, like I had missed something. It was all part of the mystery that builds throughout the story. It left me wanting more, and luckily there are 7 books more for me. ;D
This book isn't appropriate for teens as it has entirely too much sexual content. I've learned that vampire and mystical books seem to be accompanied by a lot of sex. It's okay, but it's done very well for the most part in this book - nevertheless - explicit.
Great story, I'll be fast reading her other works. I was so glad I read this on the Kindle because I could just download the next book!
This is a great series. I read this book a few years back while deployed in Iraq, but forgot to pick up the next book when I returned. I rediscovered it when my wife was unpacking some boxes including some of the later books, and I had to order the missing ones and begin the series again. It is a great book if you like magic, action, and sex.
Hamilton is one of my favorite authors. I like her Merry Gentry series a lot. The characters are fun, hot, scary, never boring. You want good things to happen for the heroine and heroes. The whole world is very well thought out and the magic is crazy. I wish a tad of that could happen in real life, but I am definitely glad that some of her imaginings are just stories.
I am still waiting for some resolution for the first series--Anita, Jean-Luc and Richard. However, I have enjoyed Merry and Co in book form and even better, on audio cassette. The characters and story line are very engrossing. From the beginning to the end, I was guessing what would happen next. Her characters are wonderful, male and female alike. Very hot! Very engrossing. I enjoyed the audio so much that I'm glad I own it. Audio cassettes make hum-drum work so much easier. Listening to Merry's adventures makes housework, ironing, driving, etc so much more enjoyable. I hope there's a sequel soon!
